Reviewing the season, one will find that in the first game Erskine lost an early lead to the Gamecocks and was soundly defeated 66-52. Three days after the season opener, the "battling sophomores" traveled to Greenville to trounce the Fur man Paladins, 97-79. Highlight of the season was the third game when the Gamecock. accomplished what was thought impossible by downing Duke 73-71. This upset shot USC into the tenth-place slot of the As. sociated Press national basketball poll. On Dec. 11 the team began their northern tour by edging Pennsylvania, 12-39. Continuing north, the roundballers suffered their firsi defeat to New York University in Madison Square Garden Two nights later on Dec. 18, they got on the winning side again, downing Assumption College. Returning to action after a 15-day holiday vacation, the Gamecocks turned back Clemson, 57-48. Two nights later, Carolina tangled with defending ACC champ N. C. State, but a basket with 0:09 remain ing clinched a 55-54 win for the Wolfpack. The following Wednesday, the team hosted Furman and suffered a stunning loss to the Paladins. Travelling to Clem i son that Saturday, USC was once again shocked with another defeat. One week later. Jan. 29, the Gamecocks regained some of their early-season poise and crushed Virginia 82-64. Joy was short-fived, however, as the Maryland Terrapins beat them 78-63 in the Carolina Field House Monday, Jan. 31. The following Saturday, the team was bombed by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. Two nights later the Tar Heels of North Carolina crushed them, but Wednesday night the Gamecocks turned the tide and downed Erskine. In a last-second shot in the Feb. 12 televised game, the Carolina basketballers were shot down 65-63 by Wake Forest. Beginning another road tour Feb. 14, the Gamecocks allowed the Duke Blue Devils to salvage a 41-38 win in Durham. Entering the North-South Tournament in Charlotte Feb. 18, the optimistic team saw N. C. State surge from behind to defeat them 68-63. The next night, the North Carolina Tar Heels pulled away from the Gamecocks 83-71. Travelling to Maryland, Feb. 25, Carolina hoped to break their losing streak-but failed, bowing 56-42. Feb. 26, last Saturday night, USC ended the regular playing season with a 59-57 winner in overtime against Virginia.
