shot poorly in both games, couldn't
seem to buy a rebound, and made
enough ball-handling mistakes to
take care of two seasons. In short,
they were a far cry from the team
which whipped Duke and Penn in
December, and as late as January
29, demolished Virginia.
Wake Forest, USC's TV op

and a few important new faces.
Jackie Murdock is the coach, hav

most important new face is that of

Sadly, Coach McGuire has had
virtually no cooperation from any
one since he came 'down here. ie
has found himself in a different
situation from that at Chapel Hill,
where he was supported fully by
students, faculty. administration
and townspeople.
McGuire is one of the most re
spected men in basketball, a suc
cessful coach and dedicated worker
for such organizations as the Fel
lowship of Christian Athletes. We
need McGuire. ie doesn't need us.
This man is capable, with proper
support, of establishing a winning
tradition at this school. A fanil
iarity with victory breeds pride.
This pride will be found not only
in the student bodly but also in the

But, overall, it's a grim story
-no shooting, not enough rebound
ing too many mistakes. McGuire's
men havc got to snap out of it.
Tomorrow is as good a (lay as any.

alumni, who will begin to reach
for their checkbooks with greater
alacrity than ever before. This is
true of alumni everywhere. Some
people may not like or agree with
that, but that's the way it is.
Our basic argument is that
while it is the primary purpose of
the University t> provide us with
an education. a successful inter
collegiate athletic program does
have its place. The University is
not according it this place. Our
tennis and swimming facilities
border on the laughable. This is a
disgrace considering that we now
have some excellent talent in these
sports, far more than we've had
before. That we do is attributable
entirely to Coaches Bill McClain
and Jack Thompson, respectively,
who have done an outstanding job
with the limited cooperation and
funds they have received.
The administration must sup
port USC's athletic program. The
feud between the two must be
ended. It is hurting the students,
and it is hurting the University.
