Stunned Wake Fe By JOHN IAYMTICH Sports FMitor F r a n k McGuire's staggering Gamecocks, reeling from crushing d e f e a t s administered by Wakc Forest and North Carolina in a disastrous road trip, take to the airwaves tomorrow afternoon, at tempting to redeem themselves against the Demon Deacons befor( a regional television audience. Tip-off time for the game in USC's Field House is 2 p.m. The freshmen play Anderson Junior College immediately following the varsity game. The Gamecocks looked like any thing but giant-killers in their in Look to for I MEN'S and the Traditionc f< Ladies' & M Open 50 Gamecoi rest, BI vasion of North Carolina. They shot poorly in both games, couldn't seem to buy a rebound, and made enough ball-handling mistakes to take care of two seasons. In short, they were a far cry from the team which whipped Duke and Penn in December, and as late as January 29, demolished Virginia. Wake Forest, USC's TV op ponent tomorrow, has a new coach and a few important new faces. Jackie Murdock is the coach, hav ing replaced the great Bones Mc Kinney who has stepped down for r e a s o n s of health. The most important new face is that of Paul Long, a transfer student MARKS 'a id SLACKS finest in i Apparel )r Gentlemen ARKS 1321 Main St. lext to the Ritz) to 9:00 P.M. Long, teaming with veteran Bob Leonard to form a strong backcourt combination, is the ACC's No. 2 scorer, hitting for better than 25 points a game. Leonard ranks No. 3 with 23. The top forecourt troops for Murdock include the fast-blossom ing Jim B o s h a r t (6-5), Paul Crinkley (6-4), Clark Pool (6-4), and Newton Scott (6-6). The Gamecocks play another re turn engagement Monday night, journeying to Durham, N. C., to take on twice-beaten Duke. Vic Bubas' charges will be itching to atone for their 73-71 loss to Caro lina back in December, and should the Gamecocks play as they have recently, the outcome will not be pleasant. Sadly, Coach McGuire has had virtually no cooperation from any one since he came 'down here. ie has found himself in a different situation from that at Chapel Hill, where he was supported fully by students, faculty. administration and townspeople. McGuire is one of the most re spected men in basketball, a suc cessful coach and dedicated worker for such organizations as the Fel lowship of Christian Athletes. We need McGuire. ie doesn't need us. This man is capable, with proper support, of establishing a winning tradition at this school. A fanil iarity with victory breeds pride. This is true of alumni everywhere. Some people may not like or agree with that, but that's the way it is. Our basic argument is that while it is the primary purpose of the University t> provide us with an education. a successful inter collegiate athletic program does have its place. The University is not according it this place. Our tennis and swimming facilities border on the laughable. This is a disgrace considering that we now have some excellent talent in these sports, far more than we've had before. That we do is attributable entirely to Coaches Bill McClain and Jack Thompson, respectively, who have done an outstanding job with the limited cooperation and funds they have received. The administration must sup port USC's athletic program. The feud between the two must be ended. It is hurting the students, and it is hurting the University.
