LVI, NO. I I COLIMIlA, SOUTH CAROLINA, DECEMBl 10. i%5FOUN)EI) 1908 We're By ENIE TRUBIANO Sports Editor The Fighting Gamecocks were just that Monday night at the Field House as they did the im possible by beating Duke 73-71. The upset elevated Carolina into the tenth-place. slot in the As sociated Press national basketball poll. The climax cam1e with 18 see onds showing on the clock as sophomore Frank Standard made gool on a layup shot after taking a pass from Jack Thompson. I)uke, thead by as much as six points twice inl the ball game, both times gave way to the ball handling and passing deftness of 'Thonipson who time and again threaded the I)uke defense to either score himself or pass off to teaimniat-es Skip liarlicka, Al Sal ACCRe Levies. Managing Editor Carolina's athletic department savoring a period of momentous football and basketball victory. was slapped Wednesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference for violating the number of grants-in aid permitted the two sports. Commissioner .7ames H1. Weaver fined the University $2,500 and cut next year's recruiting allot ment by five. Athletic Director -Marvin Hass said the infraction-five in excess of the 1.10 grant-in-aid athletics permitted for football and basket ball-was "an honest mistake." "We were under the impression that several injured boys who had been permanently ruled out of further competition by doctors did not have to be counted toward the grant-in-aid limit," Bass said. lie added thot in many cases the athletic department has continued fin a ia l aid to formr I athl ete, beyond the requ ~ reenints of the tate Action ious Items sored by Setns. "It was great team play that won it for us. none of those boys are selfish," said a jubilant Coach Frank McGuire after the game. "Kickey gave us a spark in the first half" said the coach, refer ring to sophomore Skip Kickey, who entered the fray i la Frank Ramsey and sparked the Game cocks to their eventual one-point half-time lead with a couple of quick baskets and ferocious re bounding. Skip Ilarlicka, in a great job of defensing Bob Verga, held the All America candidate to two field goals for the half and five for the game, while he himself swished the net for 19 to top all scorers. But the man most responsihle in the overall team victory had to be Jack Thompson, the Brooklyn priman Fine Fo Atlantic Coast Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic As sociation in order to help these young men complete their educa tion. Announcement of the Univer sity, infraction was made Wednes day afternoon following a meeting of the Board of Trustees. The U SC sittiation is similar to a ruling by the ACC last weekend against Carolina's sister state uni %ersity, Clemson. Clemson was found to have 16 over the 1.0 iimit. for football and basketball grants-in-aid and also wa. fined $2,500. Commenting f u r t h e r on the overage, Bass said the University recently has lost fewer athletes than normal for academic rcasons and dropouts. "The athletic department re grets any inconvenience it may have caused Commissioner Weaver and other members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and we will certainly abide by Commissioner Weaver's ruling," Bass added. The commissioner's cutting of the 1966-67 recruiting allotment at the University by five will limit grants-in-aid to no more than 35 students for footlxtl and basket ball. An ACC rule adopted last year to replace the 1.10 ru!e and effective with 1966-67 recruiting year will limit all confe rence members to 10 grants-in-aid, 35 for football and five for- basket ball each year. The university was also in structed to issue no additional scholarships to any studlent "pres ently enrolled or incoming"' for the remiainderi of the curirent acadlemic year. This includes anyv for the spr ing semiester. na's Chra 4 FA F.~Nl w ill feature someti of formier,. "Wh< broke the Duko press, and actuallN won the ball game with his grea passing," "Also, Standard (Frank and Schroeder (.John) did a fin( job underneath for USC." After the half, each tean swapped the lead as play got ex tremely rough and ended in v double technical called agains Carolina Coaches McGuire anl Freeman. Duke then built a six point lead, and it looked as if thi: would be all for the Gamecocks But once again the sophomore: took over. A lay-up by Standar< and a jump shot by Thompson who then drove the length of th< court through four )uke defend ers, and fed Ilarlicka for anothel (Continued on page 7) is Athle rFive. Weaver, in his reprimanc stated, "Although James A. Mor ris, faculty athletic chairman a USC, was most cooperative an( made every effort to clarify th. situation, in view of the fact tha the incomplete and contradictor, information be furnished wa given to him in such piecemea fashion, one must conclude tha the person or persons compilin the list of recipients of athleti awards were cither careless, unin formed or attempting to withhol information. For this modus op erandi the athletic department a the University of South Carolin is reprimanded." Student Le Pass Variel Student legislators froz South Carolina flocked to th State House last weekend to dis cuss state problems and pas legislation affecting the stat a present and in the future.
