Last week the Columbia Police
Department issued a warning to
all recipients of dolls from Viet
Nam to beware of possible ex
plosives in them; one Carolina
student was deeply concerned
since she had just received such a
doll from her father, stationed in
South Viet Nam.
Kathleen Padgett, a freshman
from Virginia, reported that the
w a r n i n g did not particularly
frighten her. "I had already in
spected the doll for explosives. My
father trained me years ago to
look for such things in almost
every place imaginable."
Kathy said she first removed
the intricate jewelry from the tiny

doll's colorful costume. Since such
devices are often hidden within the
body of the doll, she examined it
carefully and still found nothing.
Deciding that since she was alone
and that "if it had to go off, it
should only take me," she brought
a lighted match close to the doll.
Still nothing happened.
When she was told of the police
request. she got her house mother
to get in touch with the authori
ties who took the doll for closer
scrutiny, but it was found to be
free of explosives.
Her experience in dealing with
such devices was largely gained
when her family was stationed in
Libya, Africa.

for my mother to cut. She was a
bit surprised to see it, and she
thought there might be something
wrong with it. Carefully, she cut
off the top. Inside was a small
package of explosives. Then and
there my father decided we needed
instructions on precautions to be
taken."
An "Air Force brat," Kathy has
lived in many areas of the world.
She loves traveling abroad and
has quite a collection of memen
tos, of which her Viet Nam doll
is only one.
