Aftertaste Of I
Eight weeks of classes have been ample
time for us to size up most of our teachers.
This gives us a terrific edge, especially on
the ones who have as many as 200 faces be
sides ours to synchronize with I.Q.'s and six
digit numbers.
Oh, professors can TRY to get to know us
EDITAR'S
The "bulletin" (meaning "important late
news") board by the ground floor elevator in
Russell House is still displaying placement
notices for October, 1964.

The missing lights on the steps between
Russell House and fraternity row create a
blind spot and real safety hazard to the
many people who use that route. They've
been out for so long now though most stu
dents have learned to feel their way.

One of the reasons the cafeteria has no
room in the mornings is half the chairs are
)iledx with trays. (And the trays with fairly
unappetizing left-overs.) All of us having
less than two broken arms could carry our
trays back they're lighter with less on
them.

P1eople enraged over the "no boys in South
for breakfast" plan, cool off; it's just to
create a more informal eating atmosphere:
(i.e.-girls don't have to wear lipstick). It's
not an administrational lIot against coedI
ucational communication.

Freshman elections don't have to be popu
larity contests. A class this size has the po
te'ntial, and its officers the obligation of uni
fying and assisting its segment of the stu
(lent body, later organzing services and so
cial events.

Easy Courses
with pop quizzes and games of Alphabetical
Seat Assignment. WE, however, have
THEM as classified as an ad in the Yellow
Pages.
Many of our courses now don't measure up
to what-we-expected. Is the teacher to
blame? Many of us are in traps of our own
making.
See, back at registration we scouted up
Crip Course 21, and stood in line three
hours to get it. The word was out that no
body made less than a B under good-hearted
Dr. Monotone.
How could any grade be worth squirming
in our seats for 50 dead hours a semester
learning NOTHING! Is this the kind of ed
ucation we're willing to spend a few thou
sand dollars and four years of our life on?
This kind of education shouldn't even be
(1vailal here.
USC has some outstanding, inspiring
teachers. They are balanced out by others
who are as stimulating as a glass of warm
grape juice.
The ones we resent are those who don't
even try ; the textbook readers who treat
each class like the Junior Book Club Story
Iou r.
We appreciate ENTHUSIASM. We irant
teachers who can instill in us a real passion
for Pairadisc Lost. They don't have to erect
a trapeze over their desk, just act a little
bit excited about what they are telling us.
Then again any teacher would feel frus
trated after awhile of practically putting on
a floor show to 35 unreceptive stone walls.
Education is a two-way obligation. It's
to be attained by faculty and students work
ing together, not trying to out-scheme each
other.
And as for these easy, little-or-no-care re
quiredl courses and teachers, there is no p)lace
for them in this University. Nor for the
studlents who want them.

pirit - Why
Ile croud was terrific! Everyone
there stood up, yeled, sang, showed
what arolina meant to him. But
"beveryone there" was something
like 150-200 students - out of
8,000-10,000.
Then came Saturday night, the
big game. During the first half,
there was a little spirit - most
of it coming from the end zone
where several hundred Boy Scouts
sat. In the second half Carolina
scored a few times, so the noise
picked up a bit. But still, hun
dred.s of students missed the last
touchdown or two, because they
left early to avoid the rush.
A winning team is a wonderful
thing; but this cannot always be
the case. Whether or not the team
wins, we, as students, are obli
gated to give them our support.
Agreed that much of the spirit we
do have is stifled by our le0ers.
