By DO-NUT RICHARDSON Staff Writer South Carolina mistakes and Tennessee's strong defense told the tale in Saturday's 24-3 Game cock loss to the Volunteers. The Gamecocks moved the ball up and down the field, but couldn't cross the Tenn. goal line. USC saw several scoring drives fail due to penalties and a determined Tenn. defense. The Volunteers drew first blood with a 44-yard field goal by David Leake in the opening minutes of the game. South Carolina's only score of the day came in the closing min utes of the first half. Jimmy Poole booted a 25-yard field goal and the half ended with the Vols. ,eading the Cocks 10-3. Tennessee added 14 more in the second half. The Gamecocks, primarily known for their secund-half comebacks, weren't able to fulfill their role as they had against The Citadel, Duke, and N. C. State. The unsung standouts on the de fensive unit were Bobby Bryant, Benny Galloway, Dan Legat who all share this week's "Cock of the Walk" honor. Wolfflets Edge Biddies By RANDY LANEY Staff Writer USC's Freshman Football squad suffered another 7-0 setback to the N. C. State Freshmen last Friday night in Carolina Stadium. The Biddies dropped their opener to Gordon Military by an identical score three weeks ago at Barnes ville, Ga. The Carolina frosh dominated the game statistically, but failed to capitalize on three scoring op portunities. Carolina's only real scoring at tempt came in the second quarter after the ground game lost mo mentum at the State 28. Another holding penalty moved them back to the 41, where William Kleeh's 58-yard field goal effort fell 15 yards short. The Biddies go after their first victory in three starts tonight in Carolin& Stadium at 8 p.m., when they meet the freshmen of Wake Forest College. The Biddies are anxious to get into the win col umn, and after being held score less in the openers, promise to provide plenty of action for their freshman followers.
