The intramural football season
officially opened Wednesday as
both fraternities and independents
began fighting for their respective
championship titles.
FRATERNITY
Sigma Nu, with Donnie Phillips
leading a star-studded backfield,
looms as the powerhouse of Fra
ternity League II. Should Dick
Christopher obtain some help in
the line, the boys from Sigma Nu
should go all the way.
Pi Kappa Alpha has the ability
to dominate League I, but in the
past they have come out of the
battle second-best in the stand
ings. Can PiKA go one higher this
year? This writer believes they
can.
Sigma Nu will have stiff com
petition in League II from ATO,
with John Hemmer, Bill Myers,
and Jim Shelley holding their
positions strongly.
Chi Psi will miss Bob Plunkett,
but the youngsters should come
through in the clutch. Chi Psi will
have to depend on teamwork, for
ther are no one-man teams in this
League which can win.
Watch for SAE with a basically
sound and strong team, and Phi
Kappa Sigma to make life uneasy
for the other fraternities.
Sigma Chi may be the dark
horse in League I. Dicke Lester
to Henry Bivens forms a danger
ous passing combination. Ronald
Chastain, Delmar Rivers, Ernie
Trubiano, and Jerry Blount will
pave the way up front, while the
addition of Avron Lesser, and
"Weasel" Simington will help.
INDEPENDENTS
A real struggle should be in
store among the independents.
Zone Five looks especially tough

in League I. With split-end Davis
and quarterback Jim Moultrie
forming a one-two punch to go
along with big tight-end Whitson,
this zone should be the team to
beat.
Zone Six will offer tremendous
opposition to thwart Zone Five's
drive to the top. Nelson and
Jones return to form a strong
contender.
Zone Four and Seven look weak
this year. Zone One is big and
improved, and must be reckoned
with. Zone 15 and Zone 16 are
basically strong teams but lack
experience.
Zone Two is made up almost
entirely of freshmen, and this
writer has no information regard
ing each team's strengths and
weaknesses. Freshmen usually
play razzle-dazzle-type football.
The forthcoming season should
instill excitement among the spec
tators, so give the intramurals a
big break and come out in sup
port of these boys. They deserve
it!

ties fell short in the first half.
The Gamecocks wasted little
time displaying their offensive
prowess. After three unsuccessful
attempts to penetrate the rugged
Gamecock defense, State was
forced to punt. Carolina took over
at their own 26-yard line and pro
ceeded to march toward the State
goal line under command of field
general Mike Fair. The Gamecock
thrust fell short at the State 26,
and .limmy Poole gave the Game
cocks a three-point lead with his

As fast as it takes to say Bobby

ing strong again. Bryant twisted,
turned, and bulled his way to the
State 36 with a 27-yard punt re
turn. The Gamecock drive was
halted at the three when Benny
Galloway was stopped inches short
of a first down.
State was again stalled by the
Carolina defense and was forced
to punt from deep in their own
end zone on third down. After a

short return by Bryant to the
State 34, Fair moved his team to
the 14, aided greatly by a fine
reception by Wayne Tucker. The
Gamecocks were denied once again
and a field goal attempt by Poole
was off to the right.
With a few minutes left in the
half Bobby Bryant cut loose with
an electrifying 39-yard punt re
turn to the State 34. But the
Gamecocks were halted once more,
and the half ended 3-0 USC.
After Benny Galloway returned
the Wolfpack second-half kick-off,
the Gamecocks were unable to
muster a sustained drive, and
were forced to punt. Once again
Scott Townsend set the pack back
on its heels with another of his
booming punts. At this point
State seemed to come to life and
marched from its own 37 to the
USC 18. But the Wolfpack attack
bogged down at the USC 18 when
the stalwart Gamecock defense led
by linebacker Bob Cole stopped
the Pack threat short of a first
down.
The Gamecocks then took over
on their own 18. Two running
plays netted short yardage, and
the stage was set for Ben Garnto
to perform his heroics.
Quarterback Mike Fair rolled to
his left on an option play and with
excellent execution flipped the
ball to Garnto at the last possible
second. Garnto then walked a
tight-rope along the near side
lines. He cut back across the field
at the State 40 behind an excellent
block by J. R. Wilburn and went
into the end zone for the score.
Poole added the PAT, and the
Cocks led 10-0.
After Garnto's score, the rest of
the game was anti-climactic.
USC's Poole added some frosting
on the cake with his 22-yarder
with 3:33 left in the game, culmi
nating a USC drive that began on
their own 38-yard line.
With a little more than two
minutes left in the game, State
started a sustained drive which
was climaxed by a score with 37
seconds left to play.
However, at this point Garnto,
Fair and Company were already
thinking of victory and next
week's game at Knoxville.

With the Dodgers beating the
Giants by only two games, some
folks wonder if the National
League race would have come out
differently had Orlando Cepeda
been able to play the whole sea
son. But there's a bigger "if"
which has been ignored by some:
L. A. played without the services
of Tommy Davis, their best hitter
and league batting champ in 1962
and 1963. . . . Giant fans must
have had a premonition. Game
No. 158 for both contenders saw
only 10,000 at Candlestick, while
the Dodgers entertained 52,000.
