Dean of Men L. Eugene Cooper
has announced the year's accom
plishments and activities of the
Inter-Fraternity Council.
Recently entered in the South
eastern IFC and ranked second in
its division by the national IFC,
the USC council began the fall
semester by participating in the
U n i t e d F u n d drive. Soliciting
funds from small businesses, par
ticipants collected over $3,500.
The fall blood drive was the
most successful yet, Dean Cooper
said, bringing in donations of 395
pints of blood. IFC also con
tributed to the Heart Fund drive
and participated in the USC
Alumni Association's drive for new
members.
During the spring semester the
IFC blood drive donations
amounted to 325 pints. On May
10, 140 fraternity men solicited
funds for the Multiple Sclerosis
drive.
IFC supported and participated
in the Homecoming parade, Blue
Key's College Bowl, and the APO
Beauty and Beast contest.
The project currently in prog
ress is a drive to collect clothes
for prisoners at the pre-release
center of the S. C. Department of
Corrections.
Dean Cooper, advisor to IFC,
said he was well pleased with the
year's record and noted that the

Zeta Tau Alpha emerged vic
torious in Sigma Chi's 20th annual
Derby Day held May 6 on the
Horseshoe where a crowd of ap
proximately 1,000 gathered to view
the competition among the seven
sororities.
Master of Ceremonies, Bob Tal
bert, announced at the end of the
scheduled races, an extra race be
tween Chi Omega and ZTA would
be held to break the tie. Zeta Tau
Alpha proved superior in this
wheelbarrow race, and Kappa
Delta scored third in the over-all
events.
Capturing the first event, a
costume judging, ZTA began her
fight to victory. Kappa Delta
placed second, and Pi Beta Phi
claimed third in this race. In the
"Key in the Flour" race, Chi
Omega's Corky McCorkle grabbed
first and second places, and KD
copped third place. Again honors
were awarded to ZTA for the
Steeplechase, with Alpha Delta Pi
as second place winner, and KD in
third position.
Chi Omega rolled in for the win
in the Big Wheel race, with ZTA
and KD in the second and third
positions, respectively. The KD's
proved most adept at the Changing
Clothes contest, and ZTA and
Delta Delta Delta came close
behind.
Mary Ann Linning, representing
the Tri-Delts, was declared "Miss
Venus." KD's Ellen Scurry placed
Second, and Pat Arnold of ZTA
was third place winner.
In the Secret Race of the day,
the Delta Zetas came in first by
doing the best job of milking a
goat. Chi Omega pulled in second
place and ZTA won third.

Hal Zorn has won tenth place for
spot news reporting in the Hearst
Foundation's national newswriting
competition for April in which all
accredited journalism schools in
the United States participated.
Zorn received a $100 scholarship
and $100 was deposited in the
School of Journalism scholarship
fund.

The Alumni Association and Ed
ucational Foundation have nearly
reached their goal of 3,360 con -
tributors and $108,518 which, if
fulfilled, will merit a $10,000 gift
from alumnus E. Smythe Gain
brell of Atlanta, Ga.
Former president of the Ameri
can Bar Association Gambrell
challenged the foundation to gain
1,000 more contributors than last
year, and the total amount con
tributed must be increased by $25,
000 by May 20.
Last Wednesday 50 new support
ers sent gifts, leaving only 125
contributors to go.
Since the successful telephone
campaign in Columbia held the
week of March 8-12, nearly 30
similar ones were held in the state
and Charlotte, N. C.
