to participate. Varsity trials and
freshman finals are set Friday
with Saturday devoted to varsity
finals.
Carolina's David Gatch won

anid is back to defend his titles.
Other defending champions en

Crombie in the 880 and Roland
Brown in the pole vault.

liefield, both of Furman, will de
fend the two-mile and mile titles,
respectively. However, several of
the defending champions will be
cast in the role of underdogs.
The Gamecocks' sophomore dis
cus star, Art Swarts, is expected
to unseat two-time champion
Dobbs of Clemson in that event,
but Clemson's Avery Nelson will
be heavily favored in both the
broad jump and triple jump, based
on 1965 performances.
Furman's Frank Saier, who
cleared 6' 7%" in the Carolina
State-Record Relays, and The
Citadel's Cal McCombs, who has
gone 6-7, will be co-favorites in
the high jump and Shannon Daw
son of the Paladins will be strong
in both hurdles events.
Clemson won the Walter John
son Memorial Mile Relay last
year, featured race of the State
Meet. The Tigers also won the
team title with South Carolina
second, Furman third, and The
Citadel fourth. However, South
Carolina is the heavy favorite this
year following last Saturday's
99-46 rout of Clemson in a dual
meet.

The Gamecock thinclads sped
home first in the 440-relay
against traditional rival Clemson
and followed the example of that
event to an overwhilming 119-46
victory. The stars on the searing
hot Saturday afternoon were too
numerous to cover, as the 'Cocks
exhibited both quality and quan
tity in completcly trouncing their
outimanned opponents.

shone in the mile relay, staving
off ace Clemson sprinter Hayes
Cone with a tremendous kick
down the finishing straight.
Bob Crombie continued to ap
pear a man of miracles winning
the mile and half-mile and fin
ishing third in the two-mile. J. R.
Wilburn fought off the ill effects
of an ailing knee to win the high
jump and place second in three
oth-r events.
In the freshman division of the
meet, the Hiddies were badly
beaten by the ClAcmson Cubs. Hill
Madden, who has competed in
high style for the freshmen all
spring, ran his fastest time ever
for the 220-yard dash on a turn
Jimmy Wingo was beaten three
times, but all three losses were
extremely close.

When Mike GrOsso siyned t pla,fy r USC rect-lntly,
most enthusiasts sighed with relOe bUt few realized just
what went into the recruitigyv of su,_h all athlete as th( 6-8
New Jersey star l>rospect.
The "man behind the seeris," Assistant Coach Ken Stib
ler tells of his traveling. sc1utin , aid r,cruitinrg in the
honest and straightforward rmailier that makes him the
personable man he is.
Married and the father of four, Coach Stibler estirrates
that he has been away from home approximately ninety
(lays his first year as assistant to Frank McGuire. "This
includes the entertainment of visiting prospects to the USC
campus," he added.
He explains the usual procedure. "The kid comes, we put
him in a room, take him out to eat, and then set up an
al>>oiritment with the dean of the school he is most inter
ested in. Later the prospect is introduced to teachers in
the department he has chosen. We have received fine
supp>ort from the faculty in this respect." Stibler com
mented. "Some of the guys on the squad, his future team
mates, then take the boy to a ball game, a track meet, or
out to the lake. We try to have him see as much of
campus life as Possible."
"Although it comes a little late for this year, the fact
that (olumbia has been picked an All-American ('ity, should
help us in the future."
Asked about his irregular family life, Coach Stibler re
plied, "As a stea<ly diet, frequent travel can be rough: and
it's all a gamble, that's the funny part. However. I am
pleased with our progress so far."
Stibler came to USC with shining credentials. After
serving as assistant to MeGuire at North Carolina. Stjibler
was assistant at Montclair State Teachers. From 1956 until
last spring he served as assistant varsity and head fresh
man coach at Loy()la University of New Orleans, La.
The New Jerse.v native. a former tennis pro, also coached
varsity tennis at Lov(la.
Just as concerned with the pre.sent Gamecocks. the coach
wishes Jim F(x were eligible to play next year. Jim's a fine
coachable young man-willing and determined, and never
an excuser <>r complainer.
F(oxie, in turn, said of the unheralded assistant. "I can
see why a boy would find it hard to say no to a man like
'Coach Ken.'
