Founding
Tonight Alpha Beta of Chi Psi
Fraternity will hold its annual
Birthday Banquet and Medallion
Hall at the Forest Lake Country
Club.
The banquet is in honor of the
founding of the fraternity both
nationally and Carolina. Chi Psi,
one of the oldest national fraterni
ties still in existence, was founded
at Union College in Schenectady,
New York, on May 20, 1841 and
installed here on May 3, 1858,
earliest of all the fraternities now
on campus.
When the school was reopened
after the War Between the States,
Chi Psi was the only one of the
prominent ante-bellum fraterni
ties to return to campus.
The state legislature passed an
anti-fraternity law in 1897, fore
ing all fraternities to leave
campus. Alpha Beta was not of
ficially installed again at I JSC
uintil 1957.
Several dlistinguishedI alumni are
expected to attend1, including J1udlge
C.Kenneth G rimsley of Florence,
who will emcee; B. M. Edwards,
Chairman of the Board of the
South Carolina National Bank;
and Robert M. Bell, National Di
rector of Scholarship and Pledge
Training. Guest speaker will he
Ashley Halsey, .Jr., Assistant to
President Jones and former editor
of the .Saturday Ev~eingij Post.
