Presents
Awards
Sigma Delta Pi, Chi chapter, in
its first annual awards ceremony
held Wednesday, presented a cer
tificate of merit to Miss Britt
Ingerd Rogeberg for her outstand
ing contributions to the chapter.
Edward Hendrickson, director of
the Russell House, was presented
a special award for his constant
advice and aid to the Society by
Dean of Men Eugene Cooper, who
presented both awards.
Carl Shirley enumerated the
various projects undertaken by the
chapter in its short existence on
campus - showed Spanish-speak
ing films, tutored elementary Span
ish, held weekly conversation meet
ings, helped the Spanish foreign
students with English, presented
such important speakers as Major
General Gines Perez, commanding
general of Fort Jackson, and Dr.
Nestor Moreno, and held a tea
honoring Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Mon
toya.
After the ceremonies, Professor
Isaac J. Levy spoke on "The Politi
cal and Social Attitudes in Medie
val Spain." The main thought of
Professor Lvy's lecture was that
while time marches on, man's atti
tude remains unchanged, through
out history.

Team recently competed in the
annual Pershing Rifles Regimental
Drill Meet held last weekend in
Fort Gordon, Ga. The Carolina
Unit captured an overall second
place for the third consecutive
year. The NROTC Drill Team is
commanded by Midshipman Lieu
tenant G. W. McDowell, Morton,
Pa. The executive officer is Mid
shipman Lieutenant (jg) T. M.
Davis, Kannapolis, N. C.
The First Platoon commanded
by Midshipman E n s i g n H. D.
Davis, Marion, placed third for
its performance of fancy drill. The
Second Platoon commanded by Mid
shipman Ensign R. F. Harbeson,
Harleyville, captured second place
for its performance of basic drill.
The Pershing Rifles is a Na
tional Military Fraternity whose
purpose is to build superior lead
ers through a program of individ
ual instruction in leadership and

USC President Thomas F. Jones
described the growth of the Uni
versity, which may reach 10,000
students in September, as "essen
tial to the welfare of the people of
the state."
Such growth, he said, is
"healthy" in relation to the Uni
versity's policy of making available
a college experience for every
qualified young person in the state.
President Jones made the com
ments Wednesday addressing a
meeting of the USC Board of
Women Visitors. Other speakers
were Dean of the University Wil
liam H. Patterson and Dean of
Students C. H1. Witten.
Mrs. Irvine F. Belser of Colum
bia, chairman of the Board, pre
sided at the meeting. Also present

students of low income families
capable of doing satisfactory col

Fidler also announced that his
office is handling requests for
