Gamecock
By EARL STURKEY
and KIT SOSSAMON
The Gamecock Room ... a forum
for student opinion . . . Kingbur
gers and Kingburgers and King
burgers .. . crowds between classes
. . . boy meets girl . . . gripes
about the food . . . but above all,
the pulse of Carolina.
This is the true Carolina. The
Gamecock Room belongs to no par
ticular clique or faction. From the
fraternity men to the staunch
independent, from the campus
queen to the homeliest co-ed, this
is Carolina.
But the Gamecock Room is pass
ing. Renovation plans will con
vert the Gamecock Room into a
special dining room and move the
snack bar to the ground floor of
Russell House. But memories of a
smoky room filled with the blaring
music of last year's hits will re
main.
What has made the Gamecock
Room the popular meeting place
for USC students? The food, al
though consumed in large quanti
ties, is constantly criticized. The
service is friendly but, spasmodic
and the tables abound in left
overs and spilled soft drinks.
Manager Lends Charm
Perhaps part of the funny
charm of the room is found in the
night manager, Harold Duquette.
Mr. Duquette's friendly banter
and joking reflect the mood of the
entire room. He laughingly points
to his white hair and blue eyes and
says, "Blue eyes and 39 years old
. just like Jack Benny."
Mr. Duquette, "Harold" to all
of Carolina, has been night man
ager of the Gamecock Room for
five years. Before coming to Co
lumbia, Harold worked in account
ing in Buffalo, New York, and
for eight years was a social worker
in Denver, Colorado.
Through the years at Carolina,
Harold has met and worked with
many students. Many friendships
have resulted and often Harold is

Founder's Day
Lambda Chi Alpha will cele
brate the 20th anniversary of their
chartering at the annual White
Rose Formal to be held at the
Columbia Country Club tomorrow.
The formal is held each year to
celebrate founders' day and will
have a double significance this
year marking 20 years since the
fraternity was granted its charter
from the national organization.
The fraternity sweetheart will
be presented as well as the new
officers for 1965.

asked for advice and guidance.
"I feel that my experience in
social work has enabled me to
help students," he says. "Of
course, I alwoys give the best ad
vice I can."
Two Loves: Youth, Fishing
Harold has become a part of the
Gamecock Room and has added a
zest to its otherwise lazy atmos
phere. He loves the Gamecock
Room as he loves young people
and he hates to see the old Game
cock Room go.
Admittedly, the Gamecock Room
is a convenient boy-girl meeting
place and even Harold found his
"lady-friend" in the Gamecock
Room. Ask him about her.
During his spare time, Harold
takes in a movie every now and
then and when the weather is
nice, goes fishing. Freshwater
fish are his favorite - for eating
and catching.
"I've got the patience of a Tom
cat," says Harold. 'If I've got
time to go fishing, I really don't
have anything else to do but sit
arond and wait for the fish toi
bite."
Yankee?
And by his own description, he's
a "funny kind of Yankee." When
he was in grammar school, he
quite often "stayed in" because of
his violent pro-Southern argu
ments against his teacher's pro
Northern interpretation of his
tory.
Harold is truly a "Southerner"
in the finest sense of the word.
His hospitality adds a glow to
the Gamecock Room.
When the Gamecock Room is re
located this summer, let's hope
that Harold is taken along. It
just wouldn't be the same without
him.
And why do students flock tc
the Gamecock Room?
Soph. Likes Ice Cream
Paul Gibert, a rising sopho
more and chemistry major, says,
"It's the place where you can see
all your friends, relax, eat peach
ice cream, listen to music, and
generally goof off."
When his girl friend from an
out-of-town girls' school visited
Paul at USC, her favorite campus
spot was the Gamecock Room, of
course.
Carl Mutch says he enjoys the
Gamecock Room because of the
interesting people who congregate
there. "I like the atmosphere," he
states, "it's congenial and typical
of Carolina students."
"You never know what's going
to happen in there," says Earle
Blackman. "You can only expect
the unexpected and besides, it's
on the way to the second floor
where I spend all my time."
"Lawyers" Take Break
Gene Odom, one of South Caro
lina's future great lawyers, said,
"I come to the Gamecock Room to
get a cup of coffee while taking
a break from strenuous studying
in the law school library."
"Well, I certainly didn't conme
here for the Slater food," comn
ments Craig Hammond, "or for1
the efficient clock-like service.
It's just a real popular place be
tween classes and maybe it's the
ten-year old records we can play
on that kept-up juke box-no, it's
practically the only place we can
mess up the tables the way we
want to."
Don Tew, who is presently em
ployed at the Gamecock Roomi,
says, "You get to meet a lot of
people here and it's got a nice
kind of atmosphere for relaxing
or goofing off. By the way, the
boys who work here ('at the food
served here so it has to be all
right."
The reason Mike Kibler goes to
the Gamecock Room is because
