Born in New York City, Miss Blake graduated from Smith Col lege, where she concluded her undergraduate studies in litera ture and the arts. She has re veived awards from the Rockefel ler Fund and from the American Council of Learned Societies. IHer next projected book is a bhiography of Isaac Babel, and she is also collaborating with Max Hayward on a collection of Voz nesensky's more recent works. Beside his or her name will be a number. Each student may vote for one (1) and only one candidate for each office. To vote for a candidate simply blacken in the number correspond ing to his or her name in the respective column. For Example: You want to vote for John Doe who is running for President of The Student Body. You look on the poster to get his number, say it happens to be No. 3. Next look on the left of the ballot under "Student Body Offi cers." Patterson said, "I think t h a t teaching is one of the most im portant aspects of faculty life, and it is very important that stu dents recognize this." Dean Pat terson is serving as chairman of the nomination committee. Faculty members of the com mittee are former recipients of the Russell Award. A compulsory meeting of all candidates shall be held in order to place one's name on the ballot and to explain rules and procedures for the elec tion. Failure to attend will automatically disqualify a candidate unless a written ex cuse is presented and ap proved prior to the meeting. No campaign material may be distributed before this meet ing. 10. Any poster or other cam paign material that will re flect unfavorably upon a de sired office, the Student Gov ernment of the University of South C'arolina. or the Uni versity itself will automatic ally disqualify a candidate. 11. Next select a candidate for Vice Presi dent, Secretary, and Treasurer and follow the same procedure. Voting For Class Officers The number of hours a person has determines the slate of class officers -he will vote for. The Poll captain will have this information and he will designate which slate you are to vote for. The pro cedure for voting will be the same as that described for student body offices. Honor Board At each polling place will be a list of those persons selected to run for Honor Board from that school. Each student from that school will vote for one candidate to represent his school on the honor board. To vote for a repre sentative, find his or her number from the poster. Then find the section headed "Honor Board." Next find the column headed by the name of the school you are in and blacken in the proper oval. Law School and Graduate School may not vott for Honor Board representatives. May Queen At each polling place will be a poster stating the three girls' names. Select one of the three and vote for her by blackening in the proper oval under the column headed "May Queen." Cheerleaders There will be a poster at each polling place giving the candidates for cheerleader (male and female) and their corresponding number. You may vote for five (5) male and five (5) female cheerleaders. To vote simply blacken in the ovals as described before under the columns headed "cheerlead ers." Amendments There will be three amendments to the Student. Government Con stitution to be voted on by all students during this election. These amendments appear in full in this edition of The Gamecock. On a poster at each polling place they will be reproduced in very, very simple form. Each amend ment must be voted on separately with either a "yes" or a "no." For each amendment there will be a number corresponding to yes and no. These amendments will be voted for under the section "For Special Election" and the column headed "1" with the subtitle "Con stitution." Disciplinary Board One boy and one girl must be elected to the disciplinary board. All students may vote for one male and one female under the section headed "For Special Elec tiur." and the column headed "2" with the subtitle "Disciplinary." The Candidates for this office will be posted at each polling place. Student Senate Student Senators from all schools except possibly Arts & Science and Business Administra tion will be voted for under the section headed "For Special El'c tion" and the columns headed "3, 4, 5, 6, 7." The ballot you will receive on Monday will have the subtitles "Senate" under the col umn numbers. There will be pos ters at the respective polling places showing the candidate's name and number. There will al so be a column number for each candidate. Please do not put any marks in column number 8 under the se'ction "For Special Election." T!his column is where the poll cap tain codes your card as to what class you vote in. The Elections Committee real izes that they have not made this system foolproof. The reason for using this system is to let the stu dents know as soon as possible the results of the election. Using this system, it is possible to have the results in one to two hours after the polls close. Under the old sy tem up to seven or eight hours would be required to tally the re sults.
