USC Beaut Vie For To 1y GENE STEADMAN Handprints are all over campus! Somehow the monsters and their escorts have been here secretly and unknowilgly. But this Monday the Beast and his Beauty will appear in person at Russell House down stairs as the first annual "Beauty and the Beast" contest gets under way. The contest is sponsored by the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity at USC. Yes, 15 pairs of contestants will be vying for that coveted title of "Beauty and the Beast." All social fraternities and sororities, includ ing 11axy Brotherhood, will have contestants in the contest. The elected "Beauty and the Beast" will each receive gift cer tificates and prizes from local merchants, along with a plaque for his fraternity and a trophy for her sorority. Merchants who have donated these gifts so far are Grayson's Men's Shop, Campus Barber Shop, Lourie's, Ili-Fi Sound & Record Shop, Brittain's, Vanity Box Hair Salon, Allen's, Miss Lisbeth, Fox Theater, Lindsay's Ltd., Dial T r e a d a w a y, Charlie's Cue N' Cushion, and Shimmy's Restaurant . . . many more merchants are expected to participate and stu dJents are urged to patronize these establishiments. The voting boxes will be placed in downstairs Russell House Mon day morning to collect votes. Above each box will be a picture of the Beast joined by a Beauty. Each box will collect the money for that particular couple. The money received for votes and the small admission to the (lance will be donated to the Donald Russell Emergency Loan Fund, a short term loan fund available to all Carolina students. For the past few weeks this fund has been depleted and needs some help. All students are urged to get out and support the "Beauty and the Beast" of their choice. The guitar, a six-stringed in strument of the lute variety, was introduced to Spain by the Moors. Ever since, its popularity as an instrument of accompaniment for singing has spread all over the world. The popularity of the guitar, instead of declining, has, in recent times, definitely increased. The current long-lived folk singing fad has prompted many a youth to save his money and purchase a guitar in order to try his hand at folk singing. Each spring a rash of young .ruitar enthusiasts breaks out at Carolina. As the first blossoms of ipring pop out of the ground, the mellow strains of familiar folk songs literally pour through the )pen windows of every dormitory on campus. The standard musical nstrument that we hear backing .hese singers is the guitar. An annual phenomenon on every -ollege campus upon the arrival of spring, is the hootenanny. Carolina students who have an inclination toward music might find a worse use for their money than investing it on a guitar. These instruments may be found at a wide range of prices from around $12 up to the three or four digit price range. (The average college student will usually lean toward the $12 variety so don't feel confounded if you have to settle for one with "Made in Japan" stamped on it.) Once the guitar is purchased, the problem of learning to play it arises. This is, however, a smal' problem. There is a large variety of "Teach Yourself"-type books of guitar instructions on the market. According to Kenneth Friedman, Vomn11.1ity service chairman of the fraternity, the boys sent out nuinerous letters to local charities and requested information about their respective campaigns and proj(ects. From these replies, nine chari ties were chosen. The fraternity then offered its assistance to these organizations, volunteering to aid them in their proicets in any way possible. At the beginning of the school year, the boys began their volun teer activities by working through the United Fund. They canvassed local Stores collecting donations to the M ultiple Sclerosis Seciety. Several of the Phi Epsilon mern bers also chaperoned a party at a local shopping center with the proceeds going to the Multiple Sclerosis Fund. "hi Eps PI ous Local leaders of the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. The members were assigned certain areas to cover and equipped with folders to be dis tributed to local lawyers. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, the fraternity assisted the Mental Health Associption by de livering presents collected for the State Hospital. The boys trans- I ported the gifts to the State Ilos pital for distribution to the pa tients on Christmas. As a project, the fraternity made a replica of a future mental health development, giving expla nations and details of the func tions of each building. The replica was exhibited at the recent Mental Health State Meet ing in February. It was also shown at the governor's conference and is scheduled to be shown at various meetings throughout the state. Also during Christmas the fra ternity assisted with the Christmas Seal campaign. The boys helped send out letters and perform some f the routine office work. Also on the agenda for the active fraternity brothers is a proposed program in connection with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. For recreational exercise, some of the niembers plan to take several boys bowling. The fraternity is also working on a project in cooperation with the University. Still in the plan ning stages is a map of the Uni versity complete with replicas of school buildings and a schedule of University events. The proposed map will possibly be placed in front of the Russell House. Phi Epsilon Pi officers are Gary Poliakoff, president; Sam Solo mon, vice president; Saul Pearl man, treasurer; and Charles Alt man, secretary.
