Manage BY JOHN LOITICH Sports Writer You've all seen the two well dressed young men who precede the basketball Gamecocks onto the court bringing out balls and tow els and generally getting every thing on the bench ready and in order. And you've probably thought to yourself that they have a pretty soft job. If you have, you can stop and think again. The two boys are Ronnie Robinson and Al Fac chinetti, and although they love being managers, it's not always a bed of roses. Coffee Break "Last year," says Al, "we had to run across the street about every five minutes to get coffee. This year, it isn't so bad. The coach has a coffee pot in his of fice." The managers must be available at exactly the moment they are needed. When a television spot light broke in the Field House one day, Robinson was right there with his broom and dustpan. In general, managers simply assist the coaches and help to keep the team running smoothly. And Fac chinetti adds laughingly, "We're responsible for keeping the ball players happy." "More Than Managers" Says Head Coach Frank Mc Guire of his two managers, "They are a fine addition to our staff. They are really more than just managers." "We consider them part of the staff and take them into meetings, McGuire continued. Managers take a lot of headaches off a coach-a lot of necessary little de tails. They've got a tough job and they're doing it wonderfully." Sophomore forward Al Salva dori addIed his praise with a sly grin, saying, "They're really nice guys. Without them, we wouldn't have any fun around here." "Don't print that," laughed Facchinetti, "we don't want peo pIe to think we do nothing but goof off." Robinson is a biology ma jor, while Facchinetti's primary field of concentration is business administration. Second Year For both of them, this is the second year of managing, and they regard it as far more tolera ble than their first year. Robinson comments, "Last year this whole thing was so unorganized you wouldn't believe it. This year things have changed. We now get our books and meals and are treated much better." There has been a lot of basket ball played in the time that these two have been USC's student managers, but they agree that last season's Duke and Clemson games at Columbia were the most exciting played during that time. In the Duke game, the Game cocks pulled into a 66-66 deadlock with about three minutes to play, before the mighty Blue Devils turned on their speed and pulled away to win by seven. The Gamecocks played one of their better games in thwarting Clemson 67-56, on television later in the season. OPPONENTS 372 .443 16 Bowling Leagu The Inter - Carolina Bowling League began its second season by affiliating with the National In ter-Collegiate Bowling Associa tion. The Carolina Bowling League, which is sponsored by the Student Union, can now compete in N. I. B. A. matches. The competing team is taken from the top bowlers in the league at the time of the scheduled match. George Mahaffee, president of the league, Invites all Carolina students to participate in this "growing American sport." The league meets every Wednesday at 4 :30 p.m. at the Star Lanes Howling Alley at 921 Assembly Street. There are a lot of nice fellas on this team." He continues, "Also, we meet a lot of people . . . and this may sound corny, but actually doing something for the school is a big part of it. A lot of people are in school for four years and never participate in anything." Facchinetti concurred with his partner on all this and added that he also enjoys the trips because they can provide interesting side lights of their own. He recalled, as an example, the incident of a Raleigh hotel last March, when an ambitious waiter charged the USC athletic department six dol lars for "beverages" allegedly consumed by Ronnie, Al and a cer tain reporter. The suspicious "beverages" turned out to be three Cokes. Two dollars for a coke is even more expensive than at the World's Fair. Robinson and Facchinneti put forth much time and effort in the performance of their dutes and are certainly deserving of recog nition.
