When a dog bites a man, it's not news.
But when one of the country's leading machinery makers
goes into women's fashions, it's news.
The step into high fashion is by American Machine &
Foundry Company, which produces the Monorail, atomic re
actors, and automatic equipment for the tobacco, food, gas
and oil, defense and space industries.
AMF also produces automatic pinspotting machines and
bowling equipment for which it is probably best known.
This is the prime reason for the company's move into
the fashion field.
Since AMF developed and introduced its Automatic
Pinspotter, the world's first automatic ten pin machine,
bowling has had a phenominal growth in popularity among
men, women and children of all ages. Over 39 million
Americans are bowling in some 11,000 modern ten pin
centers today, the majority of which are equipped by AMF.
Many of today's bowlers are women, and it is because of
them AMF turned its attention to haute couture.
Clothes Make The Bowler
Unlike most other sports and recreational activities,
bowling does not require a uniform or special clothing. Yet

re Striking
the type of clothing worn while bowling has a direct effect
on the number of strikes and spares women bowlers get.
Clothes that are too tight will cramp a bowler's move
ment, and those that are too loose can obstruct delivery of
the ball and effect style.
Realizing a woman's natural instinct for style, color and
fashion, AMF commissioned leading designers in the United
States and Europe to develop a line of sportswear that would
be attractive, ideally styled for good bowling and suitable
for casual off-the-lanes wear.
The Spring '65 line has just been introduced under the
almost-endless label "'Her. MacGregor Pro Shop Collection
of Active Sports Fashions Approved For Bowling By AMF."
While the name may be long, the clothes are definitely not
short on style. Made by MacGregor, the country's leading
".signer of sportswear fashions, the bowling line combines
color, style, suitability for bowling and versatility for casual
wear.
Several styles were designed to harmonize with the
rainbow of color selections of bowling balls, bags and shoes
in the AMF Fashion Line of bowling accessories.
Bowling Is Booming
Many of the selections are mix 'n' match reversible en
sembles suitable for campus wear and casual dates to the
bowling center.
Throughout the country, a bowling date is fast becoming
one of the most popular off-campus activities. This is be
cause it is just as heavy on fun as it is light on the perpet
ual student budget.
Cramped-for-cash collegians have to look far before
finding anything that offers so many hours of fun for so
little money. For about three dollars, one couple on a bowl
ing (late can roll three games each, including use of bowling
balls and shoes, and enjoy two or three hours of fun. Re
freshments are extra. Double dates and group parties cost
the same per couple, but are even more fun.
Local Lanes Available
Gamecock bowlers can fill in a full afternoon or evening
of fun at Richland Bowl, 4123 Beltline Boulevard, Coumbia,
or Columbia Triangle Lanes, 900 Axtell Drive, Cayce. The
centers are equipped by AMF, and can arrange instructions
for those who don't know how to bowl.
They're good places for Gamecock co-eds to sport their
new bowling fashions, any time of the day or night through
out the week.
It's nice to know that the company which makes auto
matic bowling machines is also responsible for p)utting out
some great fashions.
