The Tigers, expected by many - to be on the bottom of the pole in the 1964-65 ACC race, have built a 5-6 mark, primarily on the C superb work of five sophomores e and two holdovers from last D year's squad. The five yearlings include: 6 foot-7 Randy Mahaffey. the latest and perhaps the best of Clemson's Mahaffey family; Jim Sutherland, 6-4, and the Tigs' leading scorer with 16.7 points a game; and Walt Ayers, Hank Channell, and Joe Ayoob, all of whom have proven themselves capable of making things sticky for just about any opponent. Jun ior guard Buddy Benedict, at 5-8, one of the smallest starters in the conference, has been the play maker and team leader for Clem son, in addition to averaging 10 points a game. Benedict's finest performance of the season came in Clemson's second game with Duke, when he tossed in 17 points and kept the Tigers in the game in the early going with his alert ball-hawking, making repeated steals. Duke went on to clobber the Tigers, but when Benedict left the game with only moments re maining, it was to a standing ovation from 8,500 Duke fans. McGuire Forces The Gamecocks, on the other hand, have been having trouble getting started, and the loss of Croke and Gregor could probably magnify those troubles a hundred fold. Gregor led the 'Cocks in scoring with a 16.7 average, and Croke, the team leader who set up the plays and kept the action moving, was not far back, with a 14.2 average. Schroeder is 6-6 and Gorsage, 6-5, and neither has seen much action this year. The schedule totaling 25 regu lar season games plus three in the s p r i n g tournament, was an nounced by athletic director Mar vin Bass. Coach Bob Reising's Gamecocks will play 16 games at home, including three in the tournament, and 12 on the road. Coach Reising expects 13 letter men among candidates for the 1965 team which reports for pre season workouts Feb. 1. Missing from last year's club which posted a 15-12 record will be seven letter winners including two All-At lantic Coast Conference perform ers. Other participants in the Spring Festival Tournament will be Ohio University, Brown University, and William and Mary. The tourna ment will be played as a feature r)f the Columbia Spring Festival sponsored by the Columbia Cham ber of Commerce. The Gamecocks will play 14 At Furman Tops Depleted Birds In 81-66 Rout South Carolina, with two key performers ruled out of action because of scholastic deficiences took an 81-66 beating from Fur man Tuesday night at Memorial Auditorium in Greenville. With Croke and Gregor out, Coach Frank McGuire was forced to open with John Gorsage and John Schroeder, who have between them played enough to produce three points a game. The only semblance of a South Carolina rally came in the early minutes of the second half when the Gamecocks closed a 12-point deficit down on two baskets by Salvadori, a Salvadori free throw and one by Fox. McGuire had praise for his sec ond string center, Lynwood Burk holder, a 6 foot 8 sophomore from the little town of Singers Glen, Va. Blurkholder scored 14 points and pulled off 12 rebounds for McGuire. Six foot eight sophomore Bruce Wells has returned to school and will start playing as soon as he is in shape. Al Salvadori hit 15 and Jim Fox scored 14 to lead the Gamecock scoring. Track Dates Announced The third a n n u a l Carolina State-Record Relays April 3 will highlight what Coach Weems Baskin considers his finest track md field schedule in 16 years at he University of South Carolina. The schedule was announced by Athletic Director Marvin Bass. The Gamecocks will warm up :or the outdoor season with a .hree-way indoor meet with Clem son and North Carolina Feb. 20 at Chapel Hill, N. C., and the At lantic Coast Conference indoor meet Feb. 27 at Raleigh. The Gamecocks may also send some :ompetitors to the NCAA Indoor Championships March 12-13 at Detroit. The outdoor season begins March 27 when Baskin takes his team to the Florida Relays at Gainesville. William and Mary, Brown and Duke will visit the Rex Enright Athletic Center M*rch 31 for a four-way meet that will serve as a tuneup for the C a r o l i n a State-Record Relays three days later. A record field of college and high school athletes is expected 'or the relays which last year drew more than 700 participants.
