A collection of Revolutionary
War weapons featuring the rare
Ferguson breech-loading flintlock
rifle recently presented to Carolina
has won the award of the South
Carolina Arms Collectors Associa
tion for the "best educational dis
play" shown at its fall meeting in
Columbia.
The association also made a
special award to the professor who
assembled the display, Ashley Hal
sey, Jr., assistant to the president
of the University, for "distin
guished" hervice in identifying and
preserving antique weapons as part
of the American heritage. The
presentations were made by Bill
Hammond, president, and Thomas
B. Pollard, Jr., counsel, of the
association.
The award-winning exhibit cen
tered around the .62 calibre Fergu
son rifle given to the University's
South Caroliniana Library last
month by John I. Moore, San
Angelo, Texas, geologist and oil
producer. The rifle was designed
and patented in 1776 by Lt. Col.
Patrick Ferguson, later killed while

Annual Meet
During the Thanksgiving holi
days, from November 27-29, mem
bers of the Angel Flight and
Arnold Air Society traveled to
Warner-Robins Air Force Base
outside of Macon, Georgia, to take
part in the annual Area C-1 Con
clave.
The program for Saturday in
cluded a business meeting for both
Angel Flight and Arnold Air So
ciety, along with a tour of the
base. The judging in the Little
Miss Colonel Contest took place in
the afternoon. Carolina was repre
sented by Miss Diane Geer.

The Student Union Activities
Committee is now receiving entries
for their campus life photography
contest.
First place winners in each cate
gory will receive a trophy, while
second and third places in each
category will receive ribbons.
All entrants must abide by the
following rules: Any person en
rolled in a degree program is
eligible; pictures will be judged in
six categories, including scenic,
architectural, pets and children,
activities, sports, and portraits and
personalities.
Also, there will be no limit on
the number of pictures that a per
son can enter; pictures should not
be smaller than eight by ten inches
and must be mounted vertically on
16 by 20 inch boards; pictures
must have been taken during the
student's college career of USC
activities; all prints become the
property of the Student Union.
