Birds BY TOM HUNTER Sports Writer Tomorrow night South Caro lina's Gamecocks open their '6 campaign against Duke with tw4 objectives in mind. The first is to beat the Blu4 Devils from Durham, N. C. an< the second is to improve over las year's won-lost record. Taking a look at the upcomint season as a whole, the chances o improvement are good, to say th( least. Last year's 1-8-1 total came a! quite a shock to even the mos despondent of USC fans and try ing to make them forget will bt like asking someone to forget a broken arm. They will forget but only when they have some. thing else to think about, like i good season. The most immediate goal, how. ever, will be to humiliate th( Dukes right before the eyes oi their veteran coach Bill Murral and thousands of Carolina fans. COACH BASS "I feel good, I have confidenct in the team," said head coach Marvin Bass just before the sea son's opener. "You can gain confidence in i poor season. You can look back and say if we had done this or that we could have won the game,' continued Bass, now in his fourth season here as head mentor. Concerning this year's schedule, which includes Duke, Florida, and howl teams Nebraska, North Caro lina, and N. C. State, Bass com mented, "Our schedule is a little tougher, but then again we played our best ball against tougher op ponents last year." PROGRESS IN PRACTICE The coaching staff has been most encouraged with the progress that has been made in pre-season practice. This is largely due tc the mental attitude of the players. Bass felt that "the kids' pride was hurt last year because of the poor record." Commenting on his quarter backs, Bass insured that senior Dan Reeves is in good health and has had his best pre-season work since coming here.
