The Tigers of Clemson edged
out the Gamecocks 76-68 in a
track meet Saturday afternoon,
at Clemson, which featured flying
mud, swinging fists, and cheering
fans.
An inspired Carolina effort to
upset the highly rated "running
farmers" was doomed to failure
when Woody Chapman smashed
his ankle into a sandbag at the
pole vault while attempting to
clear the bar. Chapman was as
sisted from the field and was un
able to continue in his special
ties, the vault and broad jump.
X-rays later showed no serious
damage but whether Chapman
will be able to compete again
this season is still in doubt.
The blond vaulter's injury came
*n the early stages of the meet,
but from that point until the final
event Carolina battled back and
almost pulled a victory out of the
fire.
USC ATTACK
The USC attack was led by
Mike McGuinness and Bob Crom
bie. The deadly duo wiped out the
favored Clemson quarter milers,
Cecil Huey and Jack Shaw, with
McGuinness cutting through the
mud for first and Crombie chas
ing him across the line.
McGuinness came back to whip
:he Tigers' prima donna sprinter,
Jimmy Wynn, in the 220, to the
gloom of the home fans who con
stantly reflected the tension of
the meet and the traditional fric
tion between the two rival state
universities.

The meet belonged to the Tig
ers of Clemson with 14 points,
and the Blue Hose of Presbyterian
College, with 11. The Citadel
scored two points to wind up far
back in third, while Furman and
the USC Gamnecocks didn't
scratch.
All USC entrants went by the
boards in the first round. Ray'

manhandled by their opponents,
winning only eight games among
them.

FANTASTIC LEGS
Both McGuinness and Cromble
ran fantastic legs on the mile re
lay and engineered, along with
Bland Addison and Edward Ken
yon, an upset of the noted Clem
son combination.
Others showed the Carolina de
sire to beat the Tigers. Alan Rose
and Jim Poulous led the way in
the distant events with Rose tak
ing the mile and Poulous the two
mile.
David Gatch won both hurdle
events, leading a USC sweep in
the highs.
In the field competition Walt
Christensen took the shot put,
J. R. Wilburn won the high jump,
and Roland Brown walked off
with the pole vault.
After the meet Coach Weems
Baskin told the muddy athletes
they had done all that was able.
