It is "LITTLE 500" time again and this afternoon some
seventy Greeks will compete in the annual 25-mile bicycle
race which in past years has drawn the interest of most
of the student body.
This race is a real athletic spectacle, and having been
a competitor as well as a spectator I can appreciate
what the entrants go through in trying to get their
two-wheeled contraptions around the track faster than
the next group.
Last year a group of polished athletes representing the
Block C Club thoroughly outran all of the opposition in
setting a new "Little 500" record. Scotti Ward was the
standout for the "jocks" with lap times thata improved each
time he rode.
This year in the best interest of the fraternities,
the Block C Club has not been allowed to enter. In fact,
for the first time in three years the entrants will be
strictly fraternity teams.
This regulation has come as a slap in the face to Block
C members, but actually it was done primarily in the inter
est of the fourteen fraternities, for whom the event is spon
sored. Most of us would have to agree that if Block C were
to ride again, they would take home the first place trophy.
This leaves the field wide open for a 1964 winner.
The team who can put five men on the track capable of
withstanding a gruelling pace and the extreme heat
that accompanies the race each year will be the winner.
Last year Chi Psi was the first fraternity team to finish
and providing they have a few of last year's riders they
could take it all this year.
However, I am sure that there are several other fraterni
ties who will have contenders on the track today at three.
An added feature to The "Little 500" is a tricycle
race among the seven sororities. This should be a real
treat for the spectators who always enjoy the thrills
and spills of the big race. It will be interesting to see
whata strategy the girls will use to propell thr three
wheeled vehicles around Davis Field.
With an interest for the humorous, and the strong com
petitive spirit that accompanies the "Little 500," The Game
cock will be there to watch the most popular of spring
sporting events.

The trackmen of USC com- a
pletely outclassed the North Caro- I
lina State Wolfpack 85-56 under
a boiling sun at Raleigh Saturday
afternoon.
The heat didn't seem to bother
J. R. Wilburn who threw and
jumped his way to three first
places. Wilburn leaped to a new
school record in the hop, step and
jump, 42 feet six and one-quarter
inches. The husky Virginian also I
won the high jump in six feet and
upset favored N. C. State javelin
throwers with a heave of 201 feet.
Mike McGuinness was another
Gamecock who had his hand in t
the winning of three events. The I
speeding sophomore sensation in
dividually streaked to victories in
the 440 and 220, after running the
anchor leg of Carolina's first
place quarter mile relay. His time
of 48.3 in the 440 is his best time
to date out of the blocks, though
being clocked in 48.1 two weeks
ago on a mile relay.
HEMMER
In the winning of the quarter
mile relay a great deal of credit
must go to John Hemmer who
sprinted from behind on his third
leg and with a burst of speed
caught and passed the State man t
on the turn. Hemmer also con- -]
tributed to the Carolina win with i
a third in the 220.

meet David Gatch collected a

LITTLE STRAIN
The 880 was a different story

rinning with little strain.
Others adding to the Carolina
coring were Edward Kenyon with
, third in the 440 and Sonny
ickenson's second in the 100. All
ogether USC walked off with 12
irst places out of 17 events.
The Gamecocks season's record

"They've done a tremendous job,
