AMA Recruits
Many Medics
On Campuses
An "extremely promising" pro
gram to recruit tomorrow's doc
tors among today's students is
being aimed at America's cam
puses by the American Medical
Association.
Behind the drive is a worrisome
set of statistics that shows seri
ous drops in the number of medi
cal students and portends a ma
jor shortage of doctors if the
trend continues.
The figures, quoted in an
October Reader's Digest article,
show that there were 108 pri
vately practicing physicians per
one hundred thousand population
in 1931, but only ninety-one per
one hundred thousand in 1957.
This trend indicates a further fall
to eighty-five by 1975 - bring
ing with it a serious doctor short
age.
The A.M.A. is fighting the
trend by sending doctors out on
field trips to talk to students.
just as major business corpora
tions send their recruiters. The
aim is to interest as many stu
dents as possible and then stimu
late that interest with summer
jobs, scholarship offers and "Bull
Sessions" that attempt to answer
the students' questions about all
aspects of medicine as a career.
Much of the recruitment effort
is aimed toward girls, reports
the article. Although today girls
constitute just 8.5 percent of
medical students, many doctors
believe the figure will triple in
the next few years, those who do
not go directly into medicine
often choose allied fields such as
dietetics, laboratory technology
or therapy.

- Nurses -
They Lead
Two Lives
By PAM DERNOGA and
BONNIE BAKER
Society Writers
It all begins with the sound of
the alarm clock at four-thirty
every Tuesday and Thursday
morning. At this time over 50
nursing students are scurrying
around, pulling up Supp-hose, ty
ing shoelaces on white Buster
Browns, jumping into starched
yellow and white uniforms, and
trying to make the 6:15 bus.
Upon arrival at the hospital it is
a matter of eating breakfast, get
ting to the floor by the seven
,'clock report, reviewing charts,
giving bed baths, making beds,
:arrying out daily treatments,
and administering nine o'clock
medications. After the storm of
,he morning has subsided, there
is an opportunity to meet and
get to know some of the most
interesting people in the world.
Their patients vary from truck
drivers to artists and from fellow
students to Ph.D's. No matter
what his status, however, each
patient has been able to give the
nursing students some insight as
to what are their roles as nurses.
The rest of the week serves as
the media for their second life.
The nurses fit into the Carolina
Community as well as anyone.
They have no peculiar markings,
except for a few extra circles
under their eyes and maybe a
fallen arch here and there. Extra
time is something they rarely
have. If they're not in classes or
labs, they are studying for
quizzes or starting on their next
nursing project. However, nurs
ing students are quite active in
campus activities. They have
their own professional organiza
tion, Meditrina Society, and claim
membership in the various church
groups, "Y," each of the seven
sororities, Angel Flight, and the
cheerleading squad.
At times it seems that one life
is enough; two lives, impossible,
but with the constant backing of
the faculty as well as fellow stu
dents, these brave, courageous
souls have four very full but
most rewarding years.
