CAROLINA
s Fair
The Coastal Carolina Fair has
come to Columbia - a magical
world of money loosing.
Fair weekend used to be teamed
with the Carolina-Clemson game.
This year it's tripled with
Halloween and Homecoming (see
poem, opposite page).
It's anticipated with thoughts of
winning stuffed teddy bears to
impress somebody special . . . an
excuse to buy cotton candy . .
free souvenirs - pink yardsticks
and pamphlets - in the exhibition
tents.
It's remembered by that certain
feeling after two ice cream cones
on the ferris wheel on the way
down . . . kicked up dust so thick
you can't see . . . begging, blaring,
barkers - the kewpie doll pushers.
And it's never forgotten.
It is against Gamecock policy to
mention brand names in stories
like . . . (ha, ha, bet you thought
we'd slip and print them again.)

Dear Readers
Hy PRECIOUS ZURIO
Featurn Staff
The campus netespaper, as we
now it today, was started back in
F908. The forerunner of the GAME
'OCK was the CAROLINIAN, a pub
ication of campus netes and litera
ure. Today's (GAMECOCK is news
nly. We have a separate literary
magazine, the CRUCIBLE.
As a GAMECOCK reader, I feel
that a great part of the news
presented, especially on the feature
and society pages, applies only to a
minority of Carolina students. To
day students and the independents
do not get their fair share of
attention. This is the only criticism
I have.
As a staff member, I know that
a lot of hard work and time go
into the puF''hing of our weekly
ueuspaper.
The staff, on the whole, is very
rnit ical of its own work. Every
F'riday the new edition is torn
xpart, page by page, as errors in
4'ording, content, lay-out, or pune
!ua tion are pointed out by our
'ditor. Each week wee striec to
wr'oid repenting these errors, but
womehow' a few always manage to
ineak in.
IBefore I joined the staff, I never
;tare much thought to how much
work went into one little article, or
htow much time w4ent into the page
ray-outs. It seemed( as though the
mrticles were written in about as
much time as it took me to read
them. This is far from true. While
writing one little article, for in
ttance, I found myself interview
ing three campus officials and
!aking notes on what they said.
Then I spent four or five hours,
x.t least. writing and re-writing my
fea ture.
With all this in view, I would
tay we have a student paper to be
piroud of. Those students who over
!ook the G AMEcocK are missing the
p'leasu re of reading enampus news
,nd opinionis an w ritten by1 fellow
ttudents.
