Druids
Once upon a time there wer
Druids. While such a nomencla
ture might make one think of ai
oily substance dripping from i
faucet, they were no such things
they were members of a religiou:
sect in pre-Christian Ireland ani
Scotland who had a rather grue
some holiday to celebrate botl
the end of summer and the festi
val of the dead. It seems that thi
spirits of ancestors were lookinj
for warmth and good cheer aroun
that time. The pagan customs hel
on tenaciously through the Romai
Catholic Church's valiant effor
at discouraging it by declaring th
same day as a period of worshil
for all the saints, known appro
priately as All Saints' Day. Ii
Latin countries, where the Druid
hadn't penetrated, Hallomas o
All Saints Day was and still i;
strictly religious; however, ii
Great Britain, America and mos
of Germany, the saints just seen
to add to the idea of spirits fly
ing aro nd, and the idea hasn'
really caught on.
Superstitions Held On
In old times, Halloween - o1
Allhallows Even, if you want t<
be technical - was very seriousl3
observed by a lot of very super
stitious Druids. They tried to di
vine the future, watched out fo
spirits of the dear departed, ani
hid under the beds in case som<
evil-minded demon developed ai
urge to burn the barn. By the en<
of the Middle Ages, the Churcl
had taken the Druid religion ou
of it, but not the superstition
People tried to divine the futur'
by such interesting methods as
pulling kale, throwing nuts in the
fire, and trying to fling a sho,
over a house. One might suppos
that you could pull kale to se
how the kale crop would be nex
year, and throw nuts in th
flames to see how many peca
trees would be lost in the nemi
forest fire, and tossed the shoe
to see how prosperous the villag
cobbler would be when all th
shoes landed on the roof and, nc
body having yet invented eleva
tors, the barefooted folk woul
have to buy new footwear.

Once a Year's
Enough
By ANDREW P. ORGONIK
Spring has sprung,
Fall has fell,
Fair week's here,
And we're rushed as hell.
Goblins, ghosts, ghouls, and girls
Halloween, Homecoming Heyday
Make us wish today was payda3
Since money, money, everywhere
And all of it we've spent
Make us wish and dream and hopi
To these we hadn't went.
The weekend comes in casually
With culottes to the fair,
As he forks over fourteen biti
To get you inside there.
Next rides ...
And dolls ...
And candy apples . .
Help it fly away
'Til grossly poorer, he takes yoi
back,
But feeds you on the way.
Next football rises on the scene
And the afternoon is spent
In wondering who, and how, an(
where
The little ballie went.
Two quarters pass, and then w<
see
Our own sweet queen get crowned
Again the game,
That brings us fame?
Then we go home.
At night we dance,
Or is it shake,
And scream,
And jump about.
It's Carolina drunk again . . .
Of that there is no doubt.
But yet it is not over,
Still things are left to come,
And begging, candy?, we shall g<
Or tricking those who don't.
Now let us look toward turke3
time
And feasts,
And sleep,
And......
No!

mechanical engineering students at
USC this year.
Special studies are offered in
an Undergraduate Science Educa

ago by Dr. E. C. Woodward, Jr.,
head of the USC Department of
Mechanical Engineering.
Three seniors in the department,
Hugh A. Gillam, Gordon C. Camp

currently participating in the pro
gram.
Objective of the experimental
program is to encourage indepen

Spray Starch, F
Recommended
BY BETTY CAPElRTON
Feature Staff Writer
Here are some hair hints for
those of you who don't have much
Lime, or just like novelties:
1. To give hair body, just spray
it with spray starch before set
ting.
2. Starch can also be used in
stead of hair spray-it is cheaper
and works quite as well.
3. There is a pink gelatin on the
market now with which you can
plaster down your hair to make
it absolutely straight, or, when
combed through wet hair and
rolled, acts to make the hair curl
tighter and springier.
4. There is a mascara which
contains slivers of real eye lashes
which stick to the ends of your
own lashes.
5. To make the eyes appear
farther apart, put a dot of rouge

6. To rid the hair of excess oil,

7. For a quick set, or to make
your present set last that ONE

ind wipe the sections with alcohol,
hen roll your hair. The alcohol

8. Peanut butter, rubbed well
into the scalp and left to harden
