Even if you are not a "film
buff" yourself, you have undoubt
edly noticed the growing interest
in movie-making as an art. In the
light of this development, Simon
and Schuster has inaugurated a
new series of books, "The World
of Film," which should be of spe
cial interest to college and uni
versity students.
On October 29, the series will
be inaugurated with two paper
book books: Michelangelo Antoni
oni, by Pierre Leprohon, and Luis
Bunuel, by Ado Kyrou. Each con
tains a biography and critical ap

Sock
By PRECIOUS ZURLO
Carolina fellas! You are about
to read an article concerning your
selves! But don't let that go to
your heads; it's your feet we're
dealing with. Actually, it's your
socks.
To those of you who are afraid
to venture out of your rooms with
out a pair of Gold Cups on, I say
"have courage." Gold Cup wearers
are not in the majority. You need
no longer hide your feet in shame
if you are wearing white socks, or
even nylon stretch ones.
Out of 50 students interviewed,
the largest group (almost 40 per
cent) wear crew socks of different
colors.
The died-in-tAe-wool Gold Cup
fans are about equal in number to
the clean-white-socks enthusiasts.
John Jones, a junior, always wears
Gold Cups; in fact he had two
pair on when interviewed. He be
lieves they're softer than other
brands and more comfortable. Mr.
Jones uses "cheap" socks to wash
his ear with. Another USC stu
dent, Charles Spiers, wears white
socks and white socks only, and,
as Charley says, "the cheaper the
better." He does own a couple pair
of colored socks though, but not by
choice - they were given to him.
Other guys who wear white give
varied reasons - they provide a
better contrast, they're cleaner,
they're healthier, they're less ex
pensive, and they last longer.
There are some who wear dif
ferent kinds yet, such as "my

The time has come to quit dodg
ing the issue and reveal the facts
I have learned from the advocators
of no-socks-at-all. Between one
fourth and one-third of the fellas
here at Carolina go without socks
at times despite the antipathy of
the average coed. Gene Todd, a
sophomore, hasn't worn a pair of
socks since the May Dance last
year. If he were to get in touch
with John Jones, I'm sure John
would be glad to give him some of
the socks he uses to wash his car
with. Going sockless probably is
cooler, and possibly is more coin
fortable, as you all say. That it
saves wear and tear on socks can
not be denied. It is also easy to
understand how socks might be
left in the room before 8 a.m. class.
Fellas, if you must go without
socks, please paint your ankles.

WUSC-FM]
By KATHLEEN HIGGINS
Having been in operation for the
past eleven years, the WUSC-FM
radio station is still relatively un
known to most of us at Carolina.
In an interview last week Mrs.
Alice H. Wyman, Coordinator of
Community Services in the Divi
sion of General Studies and Exten
sion and supervisor of WUSC-FM,
Tale Told

Elephant
It all began around Derby Day
last Spring because Stephanie
Adair wanted to be an elephant.
Afterwards, costumes from all
the other sororities landed logic
ally in the waste basket, but there
weren't enough physics majors in
Pi Phi to figure how to fit a six
square elephant into a one-foot
round hole. S. it stood stalwartly
in the corner all through fall rush.
The excuse given was to send
the head to Mrs. Massenburg,
grand council President for the
sorority, and an active Republi
can; meanwhile, no one was ex
actly sure how to wrap the trunk.
Beverly Barrett insisted that it
was just a shame to throw away
the rest of it.
The next day it was in the mid
dle of her room.
Lynn Fishburne, her roommate,
walked in and screamed. Promptly
moved it to Beverly's bed.
Through South's elevator it
reached Glenn Millsap and Genie
Howie's room, and totally toured
the whole fourth floor. It was
last seen in Racheal Blair's room
on the ninth.
And there's no ending to the
story because nobody knows how
a six-foot headless elephant could
disintegrate ten stories up in a
girls' dorm.

1 Explains
a
unctions
discussed some of the purposes and I
functions of this unique radio sta- r
tion.
The station, owned by the Divi
sio nof General Studies and Exten
sion and operated as a public serv
ice, is licensed to provide in-school
listening programs for the public
schools of Richland and Lexington
counties. This it does from 9 a.m.
to 12 noon five days a week.
"Let Science Tell Us" for grades
1-8, "Uncle Dan From Froggy Hol
low Farm" for grades 4-6, "Let's
Sing" for grades 1-3 and a social
studies program for the fifth
grade are some of the programs
broadcast by the station.
From noon until 6 p.m. the sta
tion is silent; then from 6 p.m.
until 11 p.m. a program of the
finest classical and semi-classical
music is presented with as little
talk as possible. There are no com
mercials.
On Saturday the "Carolina
News Digest" is on the air at
6 p.m. The purpose of the program
is to tell the general public what
is happening at USC rather than
to inform the student body of any
events.
The station is operated by two
interested assistants and one stu
dent engineer. Although not sup
plied with the latest equipment, the
station sends out a notably clear
signal.
Mrs. Wyman stressed the fact
that the purposes of WUSC-FM
are entirely different from those
of the other campus station,
WUSC-AM. WUSC-FM is not a
training ground for announcers or
disc-jockies. The personality of the
announcer is kept in the back
ground; the music is the important
thing.
Remarking that the station has
a small but faithful audience, Mrs.
Wyman said, "As long as there are
classroom teachers who use
it as a teaching supplement and
some home listeners who enjoy the
music, we will continue to operate
WUSC-FM."
