The "Fightin' Gamecocks," who
still have the taste of Terrapin
stew on their lips, will seek vic
tory number two against the
Georgia Bulldogs in Athens to
morrow afternoon.
Carolina will be playing with
out the services of first unit
quarterback Dan Reeves, who suf
fered an eye injury in last week's
home opener. Dan wanted to play
the second half against the Terps,
but it looks as if he will have to
wait until the N. C. State game
October 12.
ROGERS TO START
Head Coach Marvin Bass will
use sophomore Jim Rogers and
Jack McCathern as replacements
for Deacon Dan. Rogers, who
came off the bench when Reeves
was hurt, will start at quarter
back.
An Atlanta boy by the name of
Larry Rakestraw is the Bulldog's
top offensive weapon. He runs the
option play to near perfection,
and is a tough, durable field gen
eral.
Last year Larry had over 1,400
yards in total offense. He follows
two former Georgia greats at
quarterback - Charley Britt and
Francis Tarkington.
The Bulldog line is big, strong

Captain Billy Knowles heads a
list of halfbacks which include

Woodward, juniors Grady Luckey,
Doug McFalls and Don Porter
field. Porterfield is an explosive
runner who has been plagued by
injuries during the last year.
FULLBACKS TOUGH
Leon Armbrester, Marvin Hurst
and Frank Lankewicz are three
good reasons why the fullback
slot will be powerful, potent and I
penetrating. All three boys are 4
juniors possessing fine drive and
debermination. Hurst is a con
verted halfback and is the fastest
of the three.
Defensively, the Bulldogs have
given up only 180 yards rushing
in two games. Against Vander
bilt last week they held the Com
modores to 40 yards net rushing.
Unlike Maryland's Dick Shiner,
Rakestraw is the kind of quarter
back that likes to run or throw

A BIG RIVALRY
It is true that this game with
the Georgia Bulldogs has no bear
ing on the Gamecock's conference
standing, but the fact remains
that this is probably USC's big
disputed first place in this de
rest rivalry excluding the Clem
son Tigers. The S.E.C. has long
been noted as a superior football
power in the South. Last year we
tied the Bulldogs 7-7. This year
we have one of Carolina's finest
teams ever - perhaps the best
in the school's history.
It would do the coaches, the
players, the students and the home
town followers a lot of good to
see the Gamecocks whip the Geor
gia boys. Let's lend our support
and enthusiasm towards helping
to cheer "our boys" on to victory.

Swin coach Earl Skidmore has
asked all candidates for the Caro
lina swimming squad, both var
sity and freshmen, to meet at the
University Pool next Monday,
October 7, at 5 p.m.
Skidmore said any student who
wishes to try out for the team
will be welcome and students who
have previously had experience
either in high school or on AAU
age group or senior summer swim
.eams are particularly urged to
turn out for the squad. Two man
agers will also be needed, one for
the varsity and one for the fresh
man squad, and divers are needed
for both squads.
