Spring practice will end this Saturday with the Spring
Game sponsored by the Block "C" Club. It should be a
fitting conclusion to four weeks of hard work on the part
of the players and coaches. Those boys who have struggled 81
to gain a position on the 1963 Gamecock football team will L
have a chance to show what they have learned on the prac- fi
tice field.
Spring practice is probably the second most important C
element of the USC football program. Good recruiting is C
the first. These four weeks in the early Spring give the
coaches a chance to see what type of material they have B
for the coining season and give freshman ballplayers a B
little taste of varsity action. L
If spring practice were not held, the players would have p
an eight month lay-off between seasons. Such a long period ai
of relaxation, free from the physical and mental strain of Ii
football would soften up the team and make it extremely di
difficult for them to be in shape come September. F
The coaches and players have both expressed a liking tc
for the spring get together because it is a chance to work di
on fundamentals without the pressure of games. Players in
who may have been overlooked during the regular season
have the chance to prove themselves. It can rightly be said
that many positions are won and lost on the spring practice i
field.
The success of the practice is left up to the players. q
Whether they are willing to put forth their best effort with th
the idea of self improvement is entirely the responsibility di
of the individual. The coaches serve only as instructors to Cl
give advice where it is needed. s
Too often the coaches are blamed for defeat when ac-p
tually the players themselves are the real culprits. If a man
is a member of a team it is up to him to see that he does t
all that is possible for self improvement. The coaches are
only out there to guide you; they can't play the game
for you. S
As college football has gradually become more of a busi- T
ness than a game, the idea of perfection has become more
important. A game is won or lost by the most fundamental A
moves of a player during a game. The inability to throw Ao
a good down-field block or react to a defense are just two b(
of an innumerable list that cost defeat in the fall.
Success in the Fall can be measured to a large extent R
by how much effort is shown at spring practice. The play
ers themselves have acknowledged this and the majority b
express the willingness to seek improvement.
Football is the most subsidized sport a tthe University
and should be given the most support. This does not mean se
that we should just take interest in the team during the se
season. Spring practice is an integral part of the football
season and it should be looked upon as such by the Student
Body.
Tomorrow is the Spring Game. Here is a chance for us
to see a preview of next year's team. Let's all make an
effort to pay a visit to Carolina Stadium and see the 1963 ;a
Gamecocks. I

Jim Beatty is as good as Cassius Clay at making
predictions. Beatty told the press that he would smash
the world indoor record for the two-mile run. He did
and without any help. The tiny runner pushed himself
to an 8:30.7 clocking. This bettered the record held by
Murray Halberg by almost four seconds. It was only
eight-tenths of a second of Beatty's own two-mile
record outdoors.
In a recent issue of "Sports Illustrated" the famed Lou
Bello said that referees tend to favor the home team. His
reason for this is because the home team is responsible f
