South Carolina's next two op
Anents are two well-balanced
teams that, as USC, have had their
troubles.
Tomorrow night the Fighting
Gamecocks attack the Wolfpack
of N. C. State at Reynolds Coli
seum. The Pack have not yet been
defeated in conference play, hav
ing downed Clemson and Mary
land. Their record outside the con.
ference (2-8) brings their over-all
record to 4-8.
O State's leading scorer Is forward
Larry Auksel with a 12.6 average.
John Key and Ron Gossell split
the center job. Neither had much
experience before this year.
The guards are Jon Speaks, who
made all-ACC and Ken Rohloff
who "Has the quickest hands in
the ACC," according to the Wolf
pack booklet.
On Monday night Carolina stu
dents will be able to cheer for
their team as the Purple Paladins
from Greenville invade the Field
House.
Furman brings a team that has
a very poor record considering
their potential. They have won
only four of thirteen contests al
though they have four players
averaging in double figures.

Sports Of 1962
What kind of a year was' 1962?
It was a year when Minnesota
opened the year by defending the
prestige of the Big Ten against
UCLA in the Rose Bowl. The
Gophers won but from now on
wins' will not come as easily.
Alabama, the national champ
ions, and Texas (over Ole Miss)
were also winners.
Basketball found South Carolina
upsetting North Carolina, 57-55 in
the ACC playoffs only to lose to
Wake Forest which went on to
finish the third in the NCAA play
offs.
Cincinnati defeated Bradley in
a playoff for the Missouri Valley
Conference title and then went
on to finish first in the nation de
feating Ohio State. This was the

>rd is not so bad that it rmight i
rot reach a respectable mark for
this year. Much credit must be
riven to the players for they are
the ones that do the work. Chuck
Noe points out on these pages how
hard the team is trying but it took
him to bring this out. We hope
that in addition to recognizing the
hard work of the players, we
recognize the extremely hard work
f Mr. Chuck Noe.
Who is our choice for "Man of
the Year?" Maury Wills. Breaking
Ty Cobb's record, he almont led
the Dodgers to a pennant and at
imes did it single handedly.
Someone questioned Maury Wills'
value to the team since he was so
banged up that he could not cover
ground at shortstop as well as he
had. For one thing, he, with the
exception of Pagan, had a longer
range anyway. For another, a
stolen base was a signal to the
Dodgers that they could still suc
.eed, that there was still hope.
The sight of Wills peeling off
his bandages must have been a
sobering yet heartening sight to
the Dodgers. Settling down was
necessary on the Dodgers because
as Junior Gilliam said that this
team made more mistakes than in
the years he played in Brooklyn.
Second choice is Jim Beatty, the
great miler who undergoes physi
cal hardships to achieve his goal.
Then come Terry Baker and Jim
Taylor.
It is the usual time for rangling
over a championship fight. As
shown by the managers of Cas
suis Clay, and Emile Griffith, there
are decent people who support
fighters.
Why couldn't there be boxing
clubs built in the larger cities with
top fights scheduled regularly?
Then the championship fight would
go to each city in rotation. This
would bring decency generally
back to boxing. It would also put
'ighters on a sounder footing.
Fighters continue to turn up desti
ute, Eddie Machen just recently,
and something needs to be done.
This seems like a good idea.
The American Basketball League
died on New Year's. It is sad
because it puts out of jobs many
able basketball players who cannot
get into the NBA where the fight
:or jobs is terrific.
The trouble with the American
League was lack of publicity. We
pride ourselves on keeping up with
sports. The only news ever heard
from the ABL when a team went
on an exceptional streak although
some papers correct short accounts
of the games.
In no newvspaper was there any
stories of personalities. There
were needed stories of the players
and not just in the city wvhere the
team played.
The American League was neces
sary as it provided emphasis on
the little man. Some of the ABL
rules will eventually be adopted
by the National League-It can
use them.
