Bird BY TOM HUNTER Sports Writer South Carolina's Fighting Game cocks put on one of the biggest resistances ever witnessed by Caro 1Ina fans Saturday night as the WAirds battled 40 minutes before falling to North Carolina, 75-65. The 3,200 fans were treated to a nip and tuck contest that left many spectators voiceless and led oach Chuck Noe to exclaim, "Never, never, in my life have I seen a team put up such a fight." USC kept pace with the unde feated Tar Heels for seven minutes before the visitors started pulling away. Nine points earlier things were looking bad for the home eam until the Gamecocks finally caught hold and pulled to within two of the Tar Heels, 16-18. The teams stayed on close range of each other and with the half 54 seconds left, North Carolina moved into a 31-27 lead. Ronnie Collins took advantage of a one and-one foul situation to close the gap to two points. Scotti Ward hit on a jump shot as the half ended with the score deadlocked at 31-31. The half-time percentages were as even as the score with USC shooting 37.9% from the field and UNC, 36.4%. Tank Team Loses Two Meets BY MIKE McCARTHY Sports Writer The South Carolina swimming team suffered a 59-32 setback at the hands of a powerful North Carolina team despite two record breaking performances by sopho more Johnny Evans. Evans set his first mark of the day in the 200-yard freestyle and twenty-five minutes later finished a close second in the 200-yard butterfly. Team captain Joe Hulings and freestyler Jim Fitzpatrick also set a new school mark. Fitzpatrick was touched out in both freestyle sprint events but anchored the freestyle relay team In the final event of the day. Joe Hulings had to take a second in the 200-yard breastsstroke behind North Caro lina's nationally ranked Thompson Mann. Al Blggs was the only individual winner for the Gamecocks, placing first In the diving event. Despite the loss, Coach Jimmy Ratliff was very pleased with the team's overall performance. The tank team lost its second meet of the season to a well-bal anced Davidson team 80-35. David son jumped off to a fourteen and one-half point lead after two events and never relinquished the advantage. South Carolina won five of the eleven events but was unable to score enough seconds and thirds. The only bright spot of the day cames in the 50-yard frestyle. Junior Jim Fitspatrick broke the record set by Will Middleton in 1952 with a 28.6 clocking. The team faces the Demon Deea eons of Wake Forest today in the UIniversity nool.
