Our sports editor has once again been sent to the infirm
ary ending this year as he began it and I Aronel Fischoff,
will attempt to write this column.
.. . More and more honors are being reaped by USC foot
ball players. . . Billy Gambrell, Jim Moss and John Caskey
have all attained the Associated Press All-American. . . .
Many on the All-State team. Gambrell, a unanimous choice,
Caskey, Ken Lester, Moss, Reeves First team. Joel Good
rich.... Richard Lomas and Ed Holler on the second team.
. . . Holler made the team as a specialist. . . . Honorable
mention... Tommy Gibson, Woody Barfield, Pete DiVenere
and Sammy Anderson. . . . Ken Lester who has a B-plus
average made the All-ACC Academic team.
. . . . This is what "Dell Basketball thinks of the Game
cocks this year-South Carolina loses Coach Bob Stevens
and its three top scorers. New coach Chuck Noe, who en
joyed considerable success at Virginia Tech will consequently
have his hands full.... Returning are junior Ronnie Collins
and senior Scotti Ward (starters last year), senior Bob
Haney, junior Jimmy Collins, junior Bill Yarbrough and
junior Terry Lucansky. The top sophs are John Gorsage and
Dennis Ostaszewski....
...... "Basketball" remarks that no wonder Bob Stevens
left for Oklahoma. He left the cupboard bare. . . . It may be
bare but it's not completely cleaned out. . . . The Fighting
Gamecocks are fighting their hearts out and are amazing
Chuck Noe while they are doing so.
.. . Our swimming team is back again this season, thanks
to the dedication of Coach Jimmy Ratliff. captain Joe Hu
lings, and others who worked out last year. There was no
team due to lack of numbers but this year the team is back
again. In fact there is a meet today at the University pool.
Several members of the team have broken school records in
practice and three records have been broken in the meets.
Support for the swimming team is just as important as sup
port for football and basketball. .
.. . Basketball Coach Chuck Noe spoke recently to the
Press Club. Mr. Noe was active in basketball, baseball, and
many groups at his alma mater, the University of Virginia,
and he still came out with a 3.7 out of a possible 40. He
advised the Press Club members to join clubs but to only
join those groups to which they thought they could put some
thing into. Mr. Noe said that the people who come here only
to study do not get anything out fo college. Through these
groups are found person to person relationships which is
what the outside world is based on. He emphasized that ed
ucation is far more important than athletics or anything else
at college.
A. It was interesting to see the trading going on between
the major league clubs. More good name players are being
traded off and in many cases it is a good idea to trade with
this abandon. The American Football League has been doing
this for the past two years and especially this year. The
biggest change is on the Pittsburgh Pirates who, changed
because their players were getting old although right now
it seems like change for change's sake, only. Dick Stuart,
Dick Groat, and Don Hoak have all departed. Stuart was
drawing the ire of the fans though he did not talk big as
he had earlier in his career and was improving all the time
defensively. One man wrote to Joe L. Brown, general man
ager of the Pirates to ask that his season tickets be can
celled because Groat had been traded away. When Stuart
departed a few days later, the man asked for his tickets
back though no argument could make him keep them earlier.
Groat was a big favorite but it was necessary to trade him
away. Never an excellent shortstop, his range was slowly
getting smaller and he is getting old. Don Hoak was the
sparkplug of the team but he too was traded away along
with two good relief pitchers - Olivo the 40-plus rookie and
LeMabe. In return -- Gotay, Savage, Herrera, Cardwell,
Schwall, and Pagliaroni. The trade will give the team more
depth, but it may take them a while to rise.
...Looking through last year's official basketball statis
tics: Art Whisnant finished fourth in the Conference in
schoring behind three pretty good boys: Len Chappell, Art
Heyman, Jeff Mullins, Bud Cronin was next, a long way
down the list at No. 20. Cronin finished third in field goal
shooting and third in free throw shooting. Ronnie Collins
led the Conference at the charity stripe.
. .. Billy Gambrell finished fifth in the nation in kickoff
returns.

Holler
BY ARONEL FISCHOFF
Sports Writer
Ed "Punky" Holler, Carolina's
defensive specialist was signed to
a bonus contract by the world
champion Green Bay Packers.
Ed was the 14th draft choice of
Green Bay. The contract provides
two bonuses, one no matter what
and one if he makes the team.
He said that he was glad to be
chosen by the world champions as
anyone would and declared that he
had wanted to play pro football for
five to ten years.
Punky's job will be as a line
backer. He will be put on outside
short pass patterns or stunt in on
pass rushes. Some of the time he
may line up beside the end head
up on the offensive end.
He was wanted also b yDallas,
San Diego, and a Canadian team.
Punky was named to the second
All-State team as a specialist line
backer.
Joe Prehodka, another Carolina
defensive specialist had some com
ments on Punky: "He's one of the
roughest on the team. He was
almost made for the position,"
and called Holler one of the two
best linebackers in the ACC, namn
ing Richard Lomas as the other.
Joe also said, "He (Punky Hol
ler) played with a broken wrist.
