A car is one of the greatest boons to mankind. I1 transports him wherever he wants to go but if he is not careful il may transport him to where h< doesn't wint to go, such as arount a telephone pole or other obstacle A car is a great mechanism but it can turn into a fiery infern replete with screams of horroi and anguish. Traffic safety is a subject thai usually elicits groans. However, it is a question of whether the groans should come now or after a horribk accident. A car is a lethal weapon. Han Ming a car should be like handling a gun-both should be done with a great deal of caution. When the driver is loaded, it is the same as if the gun were loaded. Both are liable to go off and the excuse may well be "I didn't know I was loaded" instead of the "I didn't know it was loaded" cliche. Re search shows that a concentration of alcohol in the blood (about two or three drinks) impairs the driv ing ability and four or five drinks impairs everyone's ability. People who can hold their liquor do not necessarily go unaffected by alcohol when they are behind the wheel of the car. Drinking can be done without overdoing it but if you do, driving is exceedingly dangerous. Speed may be fun but it is no fun when your wheels suddenly leave the road for other places. Speed was found to be a contrib uting factor in one-third of all fatal traffic accidents last year. At high speeds, the human body becomes increasingly invulnerable when an accident takes place. If an injury occurs at 60 miles an hour or more, the injured person is eight times more likely to die of his injuries than if he had been injured in an accident at 20 miles an hour. The Automotive Crash Injury Research group of Cornell Univer sity estimates that seat belts would save 5,000 lives a year and would reduce serious injury by one-third, if seat belts were installed and used. The word used is included because there have been not a few instances where someone had the seat belt beside them but did not use it and therefore was injured or killed. Driving is hazardous at this time of the year in many parts of the country and, according to fore casts, will soon be so here. It is recommended that car owners keep proper vehicle maintenance. Espe cially needed for winter weather headlights and tail lights, wind shield wipers for back and front windows, and defrosters.
