Remember the tea-cup? Not
many USC students do. The tea
cup is a gold trophy which was to
be exchanged between the Caro
lina and Clemson Blue Key chap
ters each year. It was to be pre
sented to the victorious team in
the Carolina vs. Clemson contest.
This practice was begun in 1948.
According to the October 8, 1948
issue of the "Gamecock," "Each

Thursday
Return?
Legislation has been introduced
to bring Big Thursday back as an
equal attraction with the State
Fair.
The legislation will be introduced
by the Hon. Raymond McElveen
in the House of Representatives in
January. The bill would bring
Carolina and Clemson together on
Thursday beginning in 1964.
Big Thursday was held in Co
lumbia from 1896 through 1959.
The return of Big Thursday would
mean the return of high profits
from the day and the attraction of
the State and nation, since it was
the only game being played on
that day, the sponsor of the legis
lation said.
The day was dropped because
Frank Howard, Clemson coach and
Athletic Director, demanded two
things: that Clemson get an equal
share of the concessions and that
the teams alternate sides from
year to year to get away from the
sun. The bill provides for both
these items.
Another reason for dropping the
game was that the loser's season
would be ruined no matter what
lie record, because the contest
was so large and since it was
played in mid-season.
Representative McElveen was
quoted by Jake Penland of The
* tate: "I have a lot of legislative
nd institutional support. We are
missing a big opportunity by pass
ing up Big Thursday."

year the tea-cup will go on the
block and the winner, loser and
score of each classic will be en
graved on the sides. The winning
school will display it throughout
the year at some point on their re
spective campuses."
This "famous symbol" was re
cently found in a pawn shop in
Clemson. It had apparently been
stolen from its position of honor
somewhere on the Clemson cam
pus.
A former member of the Blue
Key asked about the cup, and the
Clemson chapter was contacted. A
search was begun, and it was
finally located. Currently it is be
ing replated in a shop in Columbia,
and it will be presented again this
year.

Senate Calls
For Action
Student Senate passed three
resolutions and sent two more to

weekly meeting Monday, Novem

Senators passed a resolution pro

Kaki Eccles to give freshman rep

vote in that body. Only the fresh
man class president had the right
to vote before this measure. It was
,elt that the representatives should
be able to represent their freshman
class constituents with a vote in
Senate affairs. The bill first read
that the three senators should be
allowed one cumulative vote, but
wat amended to read three votes
collectively - or one vote indi
vidually.
Also passed was a resolution
proposed by vice-president John

OnClemson
Dear Students:
As you know, this coming week
end many Carolina students will
make their once-every-two year
trip to the cow pastures of Clem
son. There we will once again wit
0, ness a Gamecock-dominated grid
a iron contest in the stadium known
as Bird Paradise (formerly Death
Valley). Although now removed
from the site that most of us have
long considered as traditional, the
.pirit of rivalry between the two
f institutons has not dissipated.
As in the past we may antici
s pate this to be a colorful occasion
a and one of spirited rivalry on the
,a ootball field. However, at times
the battle has been foolishly and
irresponsibly continued after the
football contest by a few thought
a less individuals from both sides of
h the field. Action such as this re
h flects discredit not only upon the
students involved, but also their
e respective institutions.
It is my sincere desire that this
Saturday be a day of rivalry be
d tween our two schools carried on
by the football teams, and a day
to promote friendship and good
feeling between our student bodies.
I feel certain that the dignity and
culture of the Carolina student will
prevail should any attempt at
riotous action be made by the
farmboys.
Sincerely,
Osce Self
Student Body President
