'codi Birds Down 'Pack' 17-6 OIn 2nd Half By Aronel Fischoff Sports Writer "Bouncing Billy" Gambrell and "Deacon Dan" Reeves, the Game cocks with the nicknames, played their way into the USC record books as the Gamecocks ground out a 17-6 decision over N. C. State Saturday. Carolina's spectacular left half p,ack gained 93 yards against the Wolfpack to give him a three-year total of 1,029 yards rushing. This puts Billy 8th on the USC all-time list and he has a chance of rank ing No. 6 at the end of the season. Gambrell, with his touchdown Saturday, is now tied for the USC record in that department, eight. Deacon Dan, who improves with every contest, became the first Bird quarterback to roll up 1,000 yards on total offense in one season. Dan has 1,022 yards after eight games and stands a good chance of being the all-time USC leader by the end of the 1963 season. The late Steve Wadiak, Carolina's great halfback, took four years to set the record. Dan and Billy tied for the title of "Back of the Week." UNC Harrie By Toni Hunter Sports Writer South Carolina's Cross Country team was the victim of fleet feet last week as the Paladins of Fur man stole the State Meet and UNC (winners for three straight years) did their usual repeat of taking the ACC championship. These contests came at a bad time for the Gamecocks because of the loss of two top runners, Ken Smith and Ed Cribbs, thus leaving the team with only five runners. In the State Meet Alan Rose took 5th place, running the four mile course in 22:23. Alan was the only Carolina boy that finished in the top ten, however, and USC finished last, to say the least. The state's finest finished in this order: Furman, Clemson, Citadel, University of South Carolina. The State F'reshman Meet was also held last week with USC coming in 4th and Clemson 1st. State continued the "quarterback threat." Cuozzo was successful on 22-37 attempts and Rossi also sported a nice percentage. Tomorrow the Gamecocks will get another shot at a quite capable quarterback when they play with the services of Jerry Gross. Last year Gross led the nation in total offense until he was injured in the Army game (sixth gam.e of sea son). This season the 175-pound general is fourth in the nation in total offense, after seven games. Coach Tony Hanley of Detroit said that until last year when Gross got his ankle broken, he had aver aged 250 yards a game - (from sophomore through six games in junior year). In seven games this year he has amassed 1,132 yards passing and 240 rushing. Coach Walt Hambrick, who scouted the "Titans" in their games with New Mexico State, Villanova, and Cincinnati, reported that four games were lost due to failure to get the PAT. This has cost them several losses by only one-point margins. He had respect for the quarterback Gross though as he said, "Detroit has scored 69 points this year and Gross has 39 of those; he averages about 23 passes a game. They run a multiple offense - split their end and flank a halfback in the slot, and also a double wing. They'll give trouble on the swing end play too. Hanley, who scouted the Game cocks against N. C. State last week, had this to say about Caro lina, "It's one of the strongest teams I've seen all year, the line plays a tough brand of football, and that Gambrell is a threat to any team, but Reeves makes the whole offense click!" st Halfbacks Allen U. 67-0 A&M "Rattlers" that defeated Al len University 67-0 last Saturday night in Perry Stadium. It was the 19th victory in a row for the Rattlers, who are the number one little college team in the nation. Their fastest runner, Robert Hayes, who has been clocked at 9.2, is tied with Frank Budd of Villanova for the world's record in the 100-yard dash. Last Saturday Hayes scored two touchdowns on runs of 47 and 27 yards. Head Coach Milton Hunter of Allen stated, "Hayes is definitely good pro material; he's only a junior, too." Asked about the type of plays Fla. A&M ran against his team, he replied, "They didn't run any thing fancy, just straight power plays." Coach Jake Gaither of Florida A&M earlier this season in a midwest press conference stated that he was "building an express way for his backs" -- they were so fast that he had to split his linemen to get them through. It has been reported that if his backs don't make it to the line of scrim mage in less than eight-tenths of a second, he makes tackles out of them. The "Rattler" line, which could also be termed big as well as fast, averages 225 lbs. And one of the ends runs the 100 in 9.5.
