'Cocks & Birds Rout UVA -4WithPotentAttack BY ARONEL FISCHOFF Sports Writer The Virginia Cavaliers received ungentlemanly treatment *t the hands of the Fighting Gamecocks Saturday afternoon s they were trampled 40-6. Five Gamecocks entered the scoring column: Rosen, Reeves, Anderson, and Caskey, for one TD each and Bounc ing Billy Gambrell for two. The score was the first of the season for Rosen and was Rosen's first college touchdown. Larry Gill, who did not score, also played well. Virginia held Carolina scoreless through the first period !ut the end of the stanza found USC at the Cavalier one-yard line. On the first play of the quarter, Reeves went one yard off the right side and Findley's point, his first of four, made the score 7-0. Virginia came back on the right arm of Gary Cuozzo and went 37 yards on five passes. Cuozzo was the individual star for Virginia, along with end Jim Hoffarth, completing 22 of 37 passes and kept the team moving well. The dreams of six points ended as Fullback Ted Rzemplouch was stopped just short of a first down. USC took over and Anderson, Reeves, and DiVenere brought the ball to the Cavalier 39. Since Carolina was only 39 yards away they gave the ball to Gambrell, thinking of a cinch touchdown and the speedster from Athens re sponded by hurdling a pileup and cutting to his right on a beautiful run. This was the last score of the half. Again UVA marched back and reached Carolina's 34. Then Cuozzo threw a pass to Andrews who had gotten be hind everyone and was on the one-yard line, but the pass was short and was grabbed by Tommy Pilcher. This play was perhaps the turning point of the game. Virginia reached the 12 when time ran out in the first half but did not really threaten to score again until the game was out of reach. The Cavaliers were stopping USC pretty well at the start of the second half until Tom Griggs fumbled midway in the period. Sammy Anderson recovered on the USC 47. DiVenere, Reeves, and Rosen all carried the ball well with Rosen dragging two would-be tacklers into the end zone from two yards out in a show of brute force. Virginia took the ball on the kickoff but soon surrendered the pigskin on an interception by Paul Kilzer. The Gamecocks moved from the UVA 23, the point of interception to the five, the last yards on a pass from Dan Reeves to Ken Lester. Gambrell took the ball in from that point. Score-USC 27; UVA 0. This was the first score in a final period which saw the Gamecocks push across 19 points and Virginia their only six. The Cavaliers finally scored with 9:38 to go as Carl Kuhn plunging over from the one. The drive was highlighted by a sasational catch by Bobby Freeman good for 32 yards which was disputed as he went out of bounds while catching the ball. Carolina finished out the scoring with two quick touch dlowns. Richard Lomas intercepted a pass and set up a six yard scoring jaunt off the left side by Sammy Anderson. Virginia reached the USC 30 before Lester intercepted a pass and returned it to the 38. On the first play, Reeves arched a pass to John Caskey who took it and went in for six points. The quarterbacks are Jim Rossi and Bill Kriger, both of whom had little experience before this year due to the presence of Roman Gabriel. Rossi is the top passer with 405 yards before the Georgia game. He has passed for no TD's. Kriger has thrown for one. Tony Koszarsky was called the best Wolfpack runner by Coach Earle Edwards before the season opened. In his first six games he has averaged only 144 yards for a 3.9 average but leads the team. He scored the only TD, and his only -core of the year, against Georgia. Joe Scarpatti was called the best back in the ACC in his pre-season press notices and is leading the team in pass receiving, punt re turns, kickoff returns, passes in t tercepted, and with 12 points is i tied for the lead in scoring. The Wolfpack are three deep at full back with sophomore Pete Fal zarano, Roger Moore, and Dave Houtz. At end are Bob Faircloth, Ray Barlow, and returning letterman Don Montgomery. State has a good interior line. Bert Wilder, 6-2, 230-pounds, is the outstanding lineman. Wilder, the 3 left tackle, has already been drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. His partner is Chuck Wachtel, !, The right guard is Skip Mat thews, Wolfpack captain.
