Carolina's football game with Northwestern last Satur
day has been re-played many times by sportswriters a]
over the country. I would like to again review the GamE
cocks' season opener, not like the views of a sportswriter
but as the opinion of the spectators in the stands, on th
field, and the loyal supporters in Columbia who were unabl
to attend the game.
President Thomas Jones, who had a ringside seat be
hind the Gamecock bench, visited the dressing room of th
head-bowed Carolina team after the game. Addressing th<
group, he said, "Men, I would like to give you the views o
a Carolinian in the stands. From a standpoint of spiri
and sportsmanship, you put up a fine showing. It was
clean game and you proved to be hard-fighting Gamecockc
Instead of using those towels to wipe away your sorrows
start figuring out how you're going to win the next gam(
I would just like to say that I was very proud to be a Carc
linian today."
Coach Bass, who was not one bit ashamed with the per
formance of his team, reported, "We got excellent runnin;
from our backs, and I was very much impressed wit:
Gambrell - our ground attack was terrific! I think ou
line out-played them all over the field."
Speaking of loyal support back home, five telegram
were sent to the Gamecocks wishing the team luck. Day
Adam, former Carolina co-captain, Chuck Noe and Dwai
Morrison, Carolina basketball coaches, Dr. Curry, of th
Carolina history department, and Dr. L. E. Dellinger, c
Greenville, sent individual wires. One that was very impre.
sive though encouraged the squad to victory and then liste
some 162 names of various stores, companies, and indivi'
uals in Columbia and the surrounding area. In spite c
actual defeat, I'm sure there are thousands that still loo
up to the Gamecocks as CHAMPS!

Cheerers
Selected
BY TOM HUNTER
Freshman cheerleader tryouts
wvere held recently. Hard work
plus sore muscles resulted in ten
carefully chosen boys and girls to
represent the "Biddie" ball clubs.
Out of a group of 78 partici
pants, these 10 were the final
choices of the judges: Boys -
David Ratchford (Aiken), Craig
Lamar (North Augusta), Jim
Black (Charleston), Harry Davis
(Orangeburg), and John Sherau
(Columbia). Girls - Diane Hall
(Alexandria, Va.), Diane Greer
(Hampton, Va.), Ginny Cone
(Charleston), J o y e e Mencken
(Charleston), and Carol Roberts
(Columbia).

GambrellAnd
Myers Give
Crowd Chills
BY FRED SCHUMPERT
"Toni Myers tied in his passing
game very well; he surely did ::w
hurt our defense." These were
Coach Marvin Bass' words about
the Northwesterin. sophomore quar
terback a f t e r the Gamecocks'
37-20 defeat.
Although the Wildcats had a
"fairly" good quarterback work
ing for them, the Gamecocks had
some 35 players operating on their
side. But one of these 35 southern
lads made quite a showing, in
spite of his team's loss - Billy
Gambrell, who ran only four times
from the line of scrimmage the
entire game, wound up with
"only" a 21-yard rushing average.
But - this little 175-pound half
back led the Gamecocks in pass A
receiving (10 yds.), interceptions U
(one for 12 yds.), kick-off returns
(three for 55 yds. and 18.3 avg.),
and scoring (one TD and two
PATS-eight pts.). This last cate
gory also gave him the leading
role in the ACC scoring race, after
one game.
Northwestern took the opening
1-ick-off from Jack McCathern.
- On the second play from scrim- F
1iage, Ed Holler fell on a Wildcat
- fumble and the Gamecocks began
to let off steam. Dick Day
a plunged into the line and gained I
two yards, and Sammy Anderson 11
followed up with a 21-yard scor- ad
- ing run off left tackle. The kick U!
' by McCathern was wide. Jj,
Northwestern was not able to ho
t knit together a successful drive
until the second quarter when they mI(
marched 91 yards with Bill Swin- Jo
gle, 210-lb. fullback, bulling over wi
from the 10. Their second score thi
came with three minutes remain- jui
ing in the half. te:
- In the early moments of the Jo
r second half Myers again selected a
' the "overland pass" and connected ish
r with his halfback Paul Flatley for ley
their third TD, making the score
S 22-6. After the kick-off Billy pa
e Camhrell took the handoff from fa
t quarterl)ack Dan Reeves and went Fi
e 78 yards for another Gamecock ya
,f score. Carolina tallied again in
;,- the third quarter, but could not
d stamp out the Wildcat attack,
which accounted for 15 more
f points in the second half. The
k (anecocks finally fell a 37-20 vic
tim of the Big Ten power.
