Pass 'J Four semesters ago a rat-capped coed walked timidly into the "Gamecock" Office and asked if she could assist with the studeni newspaper. Her offer was warmly accepted and now, two years later, the once cub re. porter occupies the editor's chair. The journalistic journey has been a mosi rewarding experience, to which next se. mester will be the climax but not the conclu. sion. For the newspaper business is some what comparable to a sports arena; if th boxer's a clubfoot, he still stays in therc swinging. A newspaper office is a small-scale mad house furnished with temperamental type writers, where both the routine and exciting are commonplace. Being on the staff is E privilege and a responsibility, a place wher learning by the trial and error method is no encouraged. In what other profession does one find sleepy-eyed practitioner rushing to mee today's deadline with yesterday's face There is no greater sense of accomplishmen than to view an accurate, attractively laid out newspaper, even if it was composed il the heat of the laundry room the precedinj night. There is no equal to the sinking feel ing that sets in upon running up the Russel House ramp at "dawn," only to discover tha the rest of the copy has already been picke< up by the printer. The characters that one encounters in th newspaper circuit couldn't fit into a meltinj pot. Then there's a day or two of peace ... and peace making . .. before work begins on the next issue. From the window in the editor's cubby hole, one can watch the Carolina Community world go by. The campus is undergoing rapid physical expansion; there is an oppor tunity to provide mental stimulation for an increasing number of Carolina students. The "Gamecock" now faces an unequalled period of change and progress. It is chal t lenged to keep pace with the growth of the University and to continue to inspire, teach, t reform, and entertain. Looking ahead at the Fall semester, the i editor is reminded of a feeling that she ex r perienced two years ago, when a member of the freshman class. But accompanying this I older sensation is a feeling composed of t pride, achievement, responsibility, a n d I humility. In closing, the editor assures all "Game cock" readers that she and her staff will r work diligently to provide an accurate and - interesting paper each week. Young Americans for Freedom soon boasted large membership ranks after a short organizational period. Liberals and conserva tives fought at penpoint on the 7amecock's editorial pages. And ven the John Birch Society round a short-lived foothold here. Young Democrats and Young Republicans competed for the student vote under the pressure of this year's state elections. Campus politicians blossomed - and some wilted - as student body officers and representatives were chosen. Even a hearse cam paigned with the slogan, "Every one is dying to vote for . . ." E ASTER holidays - geography students and others studied aolian landforms at the beach. Expected enrollment increase* prompted the year-round opera tion of classes, with a two-session summer school offered for the first time. Intelligent Faith Week, Na tional Doughnut Week to some, was symbolized this year by a question mark in a cupped hand, and it left many with unanswered questions. Protestant convoca tion leader Rev. Joseph Mathews said, "You have to do your own living and your own dying. And you have to do your own think ing; you don't dare let anyone else think for you" -- which sums it up pretty well. USC beat Clemson led by Billy Gambrell's yard-gobbling runs and cheered by pre-game activi ties in which Carolina men dressed in Clemson uniforms trotted out, began warming up to Clemson cheers, and started... twisting. S TUDENT Senate was dubbed masters of descent after re versing their student seating de cision twice. "East is east, and west is west, and the wrong side I have chosen" to be their theme.. And even I don't know what~ their final decision is. And now it's time for the last Gamecock of the year to go to press -- seems everything has been said and all that's left is - good-bye. )N CAMPUS
