Genii Ge nl* C-enle CAr%1n Miss Geni Garvin was elected "Dream Girl" of Pi Kappa Alphal for 1962 last Friday night at the annual Dream Girl formal held Yesterd Pre By Regina Galgano Henry D. Herring, Sonny to some, is our outstanding person ality for the week. If many of you have not seen him you may know of him as your English 12 prof. Sonny is a graduate student doing his graduate work in Eng lish. Sonny came to the University from North Charleston. Straight from the halls of his high school to the University he came, before he even got his high school di ploma. Dunham, as he was known before he entered Carolina, fin ished high school early and fol lowed this record up by finishing Carolina early, and by topping it off with the honor of being elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While an undergraduate student he was a very active member of the debate team, and through the combined efforts of the team led the University to many honors. On the basis of the West Point Regionals he was voted the beat theoretical debator in the South. Sonny was also a member of Blue Key and chairman of High School Day. In his senior year, which was last year, he was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award, and this year his efforts got him elected to Who's Who In American Colleges and Univer sities. Sonny was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and served the fraternity in the capac ity of Parlimentarian. He was also elected to KSK service fra ternity. "One of the best things that I ever won at Carolina was the Bel ser Award, which was a $400 award in English." Next fall Sonny plans to continue his work A man v He could use made for the rr to the skin. . Mennen Spra) skin. And it wc other deodoral ecompIe G;arvin Rei ....... She was E ay: Stud 5ently: I in English at Northwestern Uni- v versity where he hopes to get his i Ph.D. Sonny's plans, after he gets I his degree, are to teach. He would t prefer to teach in a University. t Sonny believes that the time has come for "revamping of col a lege standards. The standards, after one gets in college, should be higher. There are too many people running around that are in rl college only because they have to be. I mean that the people who are being forced to go to college f who are not really interested in obtaining a degree should not be here. It's a waste of the insti t tution's time and money as well as that of the individual. Everyone talks about making the entrance e standards higher, and I fully agree with this, but I think that these high standards should be continued throughout the college career. This would not only im- e prove the colleges and Universi- C ties around the country, but would c weed out those people who are not entirely capable of maintaining a decent average and who are wast ing their tire playing around." Sonny said that his life before t he entered school was very nor- i mal and happy. He never did any- n thing drastic, "or anything out of the ordinary. 1 guess I did the i usual childish thing., and I know r that I must have done somethingi v exciting, but I can't think of it.'' a As for debating, Dunham says, y "debating is a team activity and not an individual effort at all. I y have seen many good debators b that didn't have good teams be- is cause they did not work together, g but worked for themselves. In de- S bating, there is no such thing as d a star. Some of the honors that Sonny nd the team brought home t< 'arolina were going to the Na onal Championships twice. "Onc re got eliminated and once w< ron this honor." Sonny wa amed Top Speaker at the Miam nvitational last year. Last year was the most success al year the University has hai ince 1959. It was last year tha he debate team came in seconc t Kentucky, and first at Wes 'oint. They won the Carolina For nsic and the Miami Invitational 'hey won the Southern Speec 'ournament and the ACC tourna ,ient. In the eliminations at Wes 'oint they ranked about sixth o ight in the nation, but the ranl n this is not certain as yet be ause the results come out a yea ater, and our interviewee has no ,et had a chance to see the scores Funny thing happened to Sonn nce when he was debating omehow the dates of a conver ion were mixed and Sonny an is crew appeared for the tour ament a week early. Sonny's family consists of ather, who is a physician, iother who is a nurse and house rife, and a little brother, whoi freshman at the University thi ear. One of Sonny's activities tha re cannot leave out is his mem ership in Tau Kappa Alpha. Thi: an honorary fraternity tha oes hand in hand with debating onny has served TKA as presi ent and vice-president. He would prefer I teaching in a "University which < is co-ed." Hmmm, wonder why? t The University has profitted a greatly by Sonny's presence, and the debate team has won national recognition by his efforts, but in his words he hates "to leave be cause this is really a great place, but I feel that I left it in good hands, and that that debate team has been left in very capable hands." We agree wholeheartedly and hope that in the future the I University can live up to these standards. Little A (Continued fr living it up at Forest Lake Cot . . .
