Efforts
Rewarding
The Gamma Xi chapter of the
Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Frater
nity was chartered on May 7th,
1961, with twenty-five charter
members.
Having lost five members via
graduation, the fall rush proved
successful, eventually activating
thirteen members. At present the
fraternity is thirty-three strong.
The retiring slate of officers,
are Max Ray, regent; Sonny
Evans, Vice Regent; Paul Collins,
Secretary; Richard Abbott, Treas
urer; Larrion Vickery, Chaplin.
The new slate of officers is Jim
Moss, Regent; Frank Morris, Vice
Regent; Larry Amick, Secretary;
Bob Padgett, Treasurer; Buddy
Connelly, Chaplin; and Dwight
Odom, Historian.
During the fall semester the
chapter held s e v e r a l informal
dances.
During Christmas Vacation Max
Ray and Sonny Evans represented
the chapter at the National Con
vention h e l d in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Being the youngest
chapter, it was felt that the con
vention offered an opportunity to
meet brothers from different sec
tions of the United States.
The climax of the year's efforts
was the Formal Dance which was
held April 12th at the Columbia
Country Club.
During the program, Max Ray
was presented a gavel by MC
Sonny Evans. The gavel was pre
sented for the efforts and time
that Max gave to making the fra
ternity chapter strong during its
first year. It is felt by the mem
bers that the chapter has gotten
off to a very good start and the
members are looking forward to
a more successful year beginning
next fall.
Paul Collins, retiring Secretary
was presented a scholarship cer
tificate and key for having main
tained the highest grade point
ratio of the graduating senior
class.
Kappa Psi, being a professional
fraternity advocates the promo
tion of the profession, scholar
ship, as well as the development
of well-rounded future pharmac
ists of which the profession may
be proud.

The International S t u d e n t
Travel Center, located in N. Y. re
cently announced that they have
been appointed U. S. Agents for
the American Student Information
Service, (ASIS), of Luxembourg.
The International S t u d e n t
Travel Center states that there
are still several thousand summer
jobs available for U. S. college
students who would like to spend
the summer working in Europe.
Available jobs include resort,
farm, hospital, child care and
camp counseling jobs plus other
opportunities. These jobs pay the
standard wage of the country in
which they are located. Wages
range from room and board only
in Spain to $150 a month for the
highest paid positions in West
Germany. This is an opportunity
not only to visit Europe, but to
earn back some of the expenses.

CRAM COURSE NO. 4: BATHYMETRY
n
. Continuing our series of pre-final exam cram courses, today we
take up bathymetry-the study of ocean depths.
Admittedly, this is not a terribly popular course on most
campuses. And small wonder. In the whole world there is only
one bathyscape, and only two people can get into it.
Nevertheless, the study of ocean depths is of great impor
tance. Why, do you realize that the ocean is by far the world's
largest biological environment? The ocean has more than three
t hundred times as much living room as all the continents and
islands combined I Unfortunately, only fishes live in it.
And small wonder. Who'd want to live some place where he
e couldn't smoke? Surely not I I wouldn't give up my good

I gether. Nothing could induce me to forego Marlboro's fine

Let others repair to the spacious deeps. Me, I will stick with
my Marlboros and the tiny garret I share with a tympanist.
.But I digress. Back to the oceans. The largest, as we know,
is the Pacific, which was discovered by Balboa, a Spaniard of
great vision. To give you an idea of Balboa's vision, he first
saw the Pacific while standing on a peak in Darien, which is
in Connecticut.
Even more astounding, when Balboa reached San Francisco,
he clearly saw the Hawaiian Islands I Being, as we know, a
friendly cuss, Balboa waved merrily to the Hlawaiians and
shouted, "Great liteocean you got here, kids!" The Hawaiians,
also, as we know, friendly cusses, waved back, declared a half
holiday, organized a luau, built a cheery fire over which they
prepared several gallons of poi, a suckling pig, and Captain
Cook. This, of course, was the origin of Cooking.
But I digress. The Pacific, I say, is the largest ocean and also
the deepest. The Mindanao Trench, off the Philippines, measures
more than 5,000 fathoms in depth. (It should be pointed out
here that ocean depths are measured in fathoms-lengths of
six feet-after Sir Walter Fathom, a noted British sea measurer
of the seventeenth century who, upon his twenty-first birthday,2
was given a string six feet long with which he used to go
scampering all over England measuring sea water until he was
arrested for loitering. A passion for measuring seems to have
run in the family; Fathom's cousin, Sir Sol Furlong, spent all
his waking hours measuring race tracks until Charles II had
him beheaded in honor of the opening of the London School of
Economios.)
But I digress. Let us, as the poet Masefield said, go down to
the seas again. (The seas, incidentally, have ever been a favorite
subject for poets and composers.) Who does not remember
Tennyson's "Break, break, break"? Or Byron's "Roll on, thou
dlark and deep blue ocean, roll"? Or the many hearty sea chanties
that have enriched our folk music-songs like "Sailing Through
Kansas" and "I'll Swab Your D)eck If You'll Swab Mine" and
"Te Artificia Respiration Polka." My own favorite sea chanty
