STEVE M
Gone, Fo
BY BLANDING CLARKSON, JR.
Sports Editor
Steve Wadiak was a great
one, both on and off the field.
He was universally mourned
when an auto accident brought
his life to an untimely end ten
short years ago. Yet some peo
ple here seem to have banished
his memory from their minds
already.
Just after Wadiak was killed,
a move started on this campus
to provide a memorial both to
him and his great feats on the
gridiron. The Student Council
and the Gamecock Pep Club
took contributions from the stu
dent body for a trophy case in
his memory.
Unveiled by the late Coach
Rex Enright at University Day,
1952, the case contained his re
tired jersey, number "37," his
bronzed football cleats, a pic
ture of the "Cadillac" in action,
and his Blue Key Trophy for
being outstanding Senior ath
lete.
Originally placed in Maxcy,
it was to be moved to the Ad
ministration Building upon its
completion. More recently, the
case has resided at several
places in the Russell House,
both by the Campus Shop and
the Barber Shop.
But what prominant spot does
this sacred collection of Caro
liniana now occupy? Do you
know where our memorial to
Steve Wadiak is located?

The fact remained and re
mains. No one knew where it
was. And all this time, since
the spring of last year, it has
been LEANING AGAINST A
WALL IN A DUSTY ALLEY
WAY BEHIND THE RUS
SELL HOUSE AUDITORIUM.
Forgotten, neglected, even re
jected, this handsome mass of
glass and wood now attracts
only the admiration of thet
Green Beetles. To join the
crowd viewing the relics of this
great Gamecock now, you prac
tically have to possess a com
pass and a native guide.
How about a little equal rep
resentation? The Debate Team
has a whole wall for its tro
phies. Wall space has been al
lotted for both Air Science and
Job Placement bulletin boards.
Even Lost & Found is promi
nantly displayed. Can't we spare
a little area 8" x 2' 6" x 7' for
Steve?
MEN AND WOMEN OF
CAROLINA, don't you care?
A tribute such as this to a star
who has become a part of USC
heritage should be displayed
proudly, not hidden. Is this all
that Carolina thinks of its past?
Isn't this a part of the hallo
wedness that is Carolina? If
not, let's tear down the Horse
shoe and put up more veil
block, let's replace the brick
wall with a picket fence!
Your cries could make the
difference, Carolinians. Don't
leave Steve's memory languish
ing away in solitude. MEN
AND WOMEN OF CAROLINA,
do you care?
