Warren Giese, once head football coach and athletic
director at Carolina, will shortly assume duties as head of
the school of physical education.
Who can we credit for these changes in status? It's
fairly obvious that a rising political group, a certain colum
nists for the State Newspaper, and several "behind the
scene" characters in Columbia have contributed more than
their share.
Giese came to Carolina in the fall of 1955 and was in
augurated as head football coach for the 1956 season. Work
ing with the material already on the "drawing boards," he
turned out a winning season with a 7-3-0 record. Five years
of coaching entitled him with a mark of four winning sea
sons and one losing (1960). Carolina has had only five
7-3 seasons in the school's history -Sol Metzger in 1924,
Branch Bocock in 1925, Rex Enright in 1953, and Warren
Giese in 1956 and 1958.
As athletic director, Giese was entrusted with each sea
son's schedule, the purchase of supplies for the teams, and
generally head of the entire athletic program at Carolina,
including intramurals. He also provided the soccer team
with their debut, furnishing them with uniforms, equip
ment, and a schedule.
Besides his everyday duties, he always found time to
help students with their problems and hardships and could
always be counted upon to support numerous other activi
ties at Carolina.
How is it possible for a man to carry out his job, try
to please nearly the entire state, and yet fight the con
tinuous harassment of the local newspaper and conflicts
with his belligerent "next door neighbors"?
This issue can be compared to the incident that oc
curred at Clemson several years ago, except that Giese's
case does not involve student action as was the case when
the Clemson students burned basketball coach Press Mara
vich in effigy. Maravich retained his position and with the
student body's approval, but it seems that Coach Giese is
being ousted not just without fair consideration, but with
no consideration at all!!
Unjust in the eyes of a few, I feel sure that the rest
of the approximate two and a half million people in South
Carolina and the surrounding area will agree that Warren
Giese's devotion and loyalty to the University of South
Carolina ranks with the achievements of the late Rex En
right.
"LITTLE 500 BICYCLE RACE"
Between the Daytona 500 and the Darlington 500 car
races comes the "Little 500 Bicycle Race," sponsored an
nually by the Sigma Nu Fraternity at Carolina. The
race, which will be "tapped" off by a big dance, is tenta
tively set for April 27 at Davis (Track) Field.
The NATWBR (National Association of Two-Wheeled
Bicycle Racing Club) will provide extensive newspaper,
radio, and television coverage for this year's event. The
proceeds from last Spring's race were donated to the
S. C. Educational Foundation.
