Working hard off the boards
to compensate for the height
disadvantage, Carolina used a
potent "quick break" to spring
someone clear constantly. This
is shown by the fact that each
of the five starters has led the
scoring in at least one game
this year.
Along with Whisnant's irres
sistable charges toward the bas
ket and sharp outside shooting,
Bud Cronin proved to compli
ment him perfectly with his
quick drives and uncanny ac
curacy when left clear outside.
Bobby Robinson and Scotti
Ward at guard kept the Roost

Scotti with his popping away

Tournament
The high and mighty played the
lowly when the seventh annual
Atlantic Coast Conference opened
yesterday afternoon at Reynolds
Coliseum at Raleigh, N. C.
In the pairing system that the
Conference goes by, the number
one ranked team in the Conference
regular season standings (Wake
Forest) took on the last place
team (Virginia) in the first game
of the night.
The fourth place team (South
Carolina, which got the position
in a drawing to break a tie)
played in the other night game
against the fifth place finisher
(North Carolina).
In the afternoon games, matched
were the number three (N. C.
State) and number six (Clemson)
teams, followed by a contest pair
ing second ranking team (Duke)
and the seventh place finisher
(Maryland).
After the semi-final games be
tween the four winners the title
game of the tourney is played at
eight o'clock on Saturday night,

Title?
Sophomore Ronnie Collins,
once established in the lineup,
and over his defensive jitters,
really came on toward the end
of the season with dead-eye
shooting and tremendous re
bounding for a 6-3 man.
Another reason for the Bird
surge this season has been the
rapidly developing bench they
possess, which has become par.
ticularly evident in the last few
contests. The ability of Jim
Podell, Bob Haney, Bill Yar
brough, Dave Barrett, and
Jimmy Collins to relieve the
regulars effectively has been a
life-saver to the Birds.
The jelling force for this ever
improving squad, however, has
been the gentleman who sits on
the bench and wishes he were
playing, the personable chap
who has accomplished the best
coaching job in the ACC, Robert
Lewis Stevens.

Bcords?
Many individual records may be
in jeopardy in the Atlantic Coast
Conference Tournament that
opened y e s t e r d a y afternoon,
mainly because of two All-Ameri
can candidates.
Len Chappell of regular season
champion Wake Forest and Art
Heyman of Duke pose two potent
threats to the relatively ancient
set of ACC Tournament records,
all but one of which was set in
1957 or earlier.
Chappell, especially, has been
setting a torrid 37-point-plus
scoring pace for the last month
and is rated a definite chance at
any record in the ACC Tourney
book.
Injured late this season, the
fabulous Heyman has not been
operating with his usual effective
ness for the Blue Devils' last few
games, but if he has fully recov
ered by Tournament time, record
holders watch out.
From past performances, Chap
poll has the best shot at the cov
eted one-game scoring record in
his first encounter, played last
night against Virginia. In his last
outing against the Cavaliers, big
Len hit for 50 points. The play
off record is 45, held by Lennie
Rosenbluth of North Carolina and
set in 1957.
The 6-8 Deacon goliath is also
a threat to the 23 rebound high
set by John Richter of N. C.
State in 1959. He has topped this
in regular season games several
times this year and is currently
pulling In 15 per game.
Two of the three-game marks
that Chappell also has the best
shots at are the point total, 106,
by Rosenbluth in 1957, and the re
bound mark of 64, set by Richter.
Heyman is a threat to the
scoring mark naturally, with his
26-point average, and because of
the close guarding he receives, he
also may surpass any one of sev
eral free throw marks, as may
the mighty Mr. Chappell.
Heyman is regarded as more of
a threat toward the one-game
two-player scoring record with
his teammate Jeff Mullins. The
two could possibly get hot and
surpass the standard of 65 set
by two Wake pla7ers in 1955.
