According to the latest figures from the National Syndi

seems to have reached its required level. All that is missings
is a few finishing touches on the National Hockey League, (

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
From a standpoint of college sports, the situation is
far beyond the threshold. Ninety-nine percent of all boys a
on athletic teams in college have been acquired through
some scholarship program. Beneficial to the student as a
means of obtaining a college education, it sometimes is
detrimental to the team of which he is a member. i
Some who obtain this financial aid play for the love of v
the sport-others just to finish college. When a player gets 1
the attitude that he can do as he pleases, he should be 1<
dropped from the team and also his scholarship bill. In ti
some schools this individual will attend practice occasionally, i:
but will seldom exert enough effort to earn the pay he gets
for one five-cent pack of Blue Horse paper. When he does
not get to play in any games, he feels that the coach be
lieves him to be inferior to the other players-so he goes
out and sets a bad example for the entire squad-fr
SCANDALS
Beginning with the "Saturday Night Cock Fight" in i
front of Joe's Livery Stable to the hiring of professional
"bookies" to operate "tote" boards, the art of gambling has 1
emerged as one of the main sources of revenue for several t
organizations. And starting with a mere quarter het on the
outcome of a game between two spectators, the present-day
athletic scandals have arisen. Now players are receiving t
their pay two-fold-scholarships and also through bribes s
to intentionally throw games. t
In the past three years it has been discovered that out- s,
standing, and even some All-America ball players have
either become ill beforte a contest, or have played in such d
a manner as to almost forfeit the game. As the situation is .
now, when your team wins a game, you don't know whether
they actually won it or bought it.
PROFESSIONAL
Professional ball is arranged on a slightly different basis.
When you become a professional, your service turns into a
job and a means of supporting a family, etc. Players are
hand picked and are then drafted, each receiving sizable
contract offers. Once a veteran in the professional field of
sports, you then begin to calculate your own contract (pro

Newcomers'
Will Obtain
Vain Duties
With the beginning of Spring,
mies all the beauties of this new
ason-the beauty of love, the
eauty of birds' melodies, and for
)me, the beauty and joy of the an
ual football spring practice.
On February 12 the Round
[ouse practice field will cordially
reet some 80 or more boys in an
ttempt to roughly estimate next
-ason's strength and possibilities.
oach Marvin Bass states that the
irst 10 days of this amicable ex
rcise will be devoted mainly to
ie fundamentals of football, with
ery little team play involved. "We
,ill concentrate mostly on group
,ork in an attempt to bring the
ising sophomores along for the
efensive unit that has been
lanned," he replied.
Seniors will be excused from the
ntire practice, and some of the
!ttermen will take it easy for the
irst 10 days. However, any senior
,ho feels that he is being over
>oked or excluded by this "privi
ge," it will probably meet with
we approval of the coaching staff
he desires to participate.
There are some very capable
)phomores, red-shirts, and trans
2rs that are being considered for
rtain duties-all that remains to
einforce these plans is a volatile
howing during spring practice.
Weekly scrimmage will be held
i Carolina Stadium, and on March
the four-week "Bass Personality
ourse" will present the results of
weir training in the annual Intra
quad Game. The Serotoma Club,
long with the Block "C" Club and
,ie Carolina student body, will
ponsor the game to whip up en
iusiasm among students, local
Lipporters and the entire state.
'rocceds from this event will be
onated to the Carolina Student
,oan Fund.

Like Minor
By Blanding Clarkson, Jr.
Spirit is a rather intangible, but
very necessary thing in sports to
day. Sometimes hard to build, it
can be easily lost if it is not ex
pressed in the right way.
Carolina spirit is really build
ing at the moment, in the midst of
an upgrowth that began during the
football season and overflowed in
to the Field House to cheer and
watch. Coach Bob Stevens' "gung
ho" Gamecocks cut loose.
Coach S t e v e n s' comments,
"We have acquired in the space of
one season a reputation for spirit
at home games that has been
talked about all over the Atlantic
Coast Conference.
"We really appreciate the way
the fans have gotten behind us,
both the team and the coaching
staff. You can see the difference
in the way the boys play when
they come home."
We've got the start of a move
ment that could develop into a
real CAROLINA feeling, some
thing that would reflect enormous
I credit upon the school and those
who attend it. Are we to lose
this now?

other foreign articles on the court
when something that you disagree
with occurs is not very rational.
It is rather minor league, or to put
it stronger, extremely childish.
It could have very serious reper
cussions too. How would you feel
if whatever you threw resulted in
a player injury, a technical foul
against Carolina, or even the for
feiting of the game to the oppon
ent by the referee.
This is not the only way some of
the MEN AND WOMEN OF
CAROLINA show that they are
not quite ready to be here. The
introduction of the opposing team's
players is not for the purpose of 4
giving the fans a better chance to
boo him. It is a courtesy extended
and intended to increase the pleas
ure and knowledge of the person
watching the game.
These incidents reflect back on
our school, our players, and our
mentality. Also, it doesn't help
our boys when they venture to
foreign schools whose players
have had to endure that garbage
in the Field House.
I'll make a slight deal with you
fans. Next time the visitors are
introduced here, let's grow up and
CHEER THEM. Then settle back
and watch our Gamecocks BEAT
THEM.
