The Twist has become so im
portant now that it has many at
tackers and backers across the
reaches of time and space.
I'm quite sure that many days
will pass us by before we forget the
pre-game warm-ups of the 1961
Clemson football team. That got
more notice, praise, and abuse for
this institution than anything of an
academic nature has been able to
conjure up yet.
We note that in London, England,
a dancing school instructor has
banned the new craze from his danc
ing floor because - as he put it -
"It is too sexy." This instructor,
Bernard Stetson stated, "The Twist
is far too uninhibited, abandoned, and
frankly sexy to be performed in
Britain. It belongs in the African
bush."
Up at the University of Tennessee
where dances of this sort seem to
be the main stream of energy re
leases, a huge traffic jam developed
in front of the main campus the
other night. You see, some music
store was holding a twist contest
and there wasn't room for about 200
students who arrived juiced up and
ready to go. So, they held their own
little contest out in the middle of
the street. Police patiently directed
traffic in, around, and through the
twisters for about two hours. What
else could they do - besides joining
in the fun, fever, and frolic?
Oh, yes, the Twist does have pro
tectors as well as attackers. The
dance has friends in Florida, too.
City Councilman Bill Myers of
Tampa danced the Twist at a coun
cil meeting in an effort to remove a
ban on the dance at the Tampa
Community Center. After he was
through, it was decided that the ban
would remain in effect.
Speaking of bans, a Camden,
South Carolina minister who has
been waging a one-man war for the
return of prohibition, has turned his
attention to the Twist. The Reverend
Ray Jones of Camden's Hermitage
Baptist Church says the dance was
"hatched in the incubators of Hell."
Jones says he has "never known a
true, Godly man or woman who
loved the Twist - or any dance, for
that matter." He added that "God
never grew praying knees on dancing
limbs." Jones recently called Gover
nor Hollings a "Tool of the liquor
industry" when the Governor de
clined to endorse the minister's pro
hibition campaign.
On the lighter side, we have been
told of another minister's run-in
with the dance. The United Press,

It seems that everyone and every

exciting sport. Just turn on your

New Year's Eve parties. This twister
climbed upon a mantlepiece to give
a twisting exhibition As he was in
a rather "spirited" state, his footing
was insecure and he plunged from
his perch to the tune of a broken
leg. As the evening was young, he
returned to the party with the leg
in a cast. As the clock stroked in
the new for '62 year, the twister in
the plaster cast climbed again, to
the merriment of his companions,
onto the mantlepiece. As his friends
laughed, the wooden structure col
lapsed under its unusual burden.
That twister is spending the be
ginning of the new year learning
to twist again - in traction.
You may be for twisting - and
you may be against it. But whatever
path you dance down, be it foxtrot,
waltz, or wallflower, you must admit
that the twist (or whatever you,
happen to call it) is here.

can see the entire picture... the man who can draw on a
broad background of knowledge, evaluate the problem,
then assign the details to specialists.
The world of entertainment may seem somewhat spe
cial, but it's a case in point. These days, it demands more
of its people than ever before. Today's musical comedy
score is often as sophisticated as grand opera. Drama
draws heavily on psychology and history. Television pro
ductions are concerned with nuclear science and political
science. If you've ever watched 'Omnibus' you may have
seen how our productions have run the gamut of a wide
range of man's interests.
So I suggest to you that even though you may concen
trate on one special field of interest, keep your viewpoint
broad. Keep your college curriculum as diversified as pos
sible. Attend lectures and concerts, the theatres and mu
seums. Above all, read and read, and listen and listen!
But pay scant heed to the oracle who says there's no route
to the top but that of specialization. I don't believe it!"
