Climbing the Pyrenes moun
ains, visiting ancient castles, and
!amping out in Sherwood Forest
were some of the activities of
.'harles Cathcart, formerly a
member of the Carolina Com
munity, and Richard "Sully" Sul
livan, a junior at Carolina, as
they toured Europe this past sum
mer.
Aboard a German liner, Charles
ind Sully .spent seven days travel
ing across the Atlantic and duck
ing the ship's rudder, which from
time to time swung through the
-eiling of their stateroom. Also
Eboard ship were the boys' two
motor scooters on which they
planned to tour Europe.
Arriving in Southampton on
June 18, they suddenly realized
they had no place to sleep that
night. Thus they went to one of
Southampton's most popular at
tractions, Epsom Downs. They
spent the night on the infield of
the famous race course.
The following day Charles and
Sully departed for London where
they "rode around gawk-eyed"
seeing the magnificent St. Paul's
Cathedral and Parliament build
ing. The usual foggy day in Lon
don Town did not show itself dur
ing the boys' visit. They toured
London and the rest of England
from sunrise to sunset (11:00
PM) for two and a half weeks.
Following their stay in London,
Charles and Richard headed to
ward Edinburgh, Scotland for a
two-day visit. On the way, Sher
wood Forest served as their camp
site for the night. Once in Edin
burgh, however, a kind-hearted
farmer opened the loft of his barn
for them and there they spent one'

f the most comfortable nights of
their entire trip. During the day
they walked through the ancient
:astles and palaces of Scotland
and rode around the beautiful
:ountryside of the North Scotch
Lochs.
After heading southward into
Glasgow, Charles found the site
f the Cathcart family castle in
Scotland. They also helped some
shepherds herd their sheep up the
mountains and then spent the
night sleeping among the sheep.
On their way to Wales they
passed through Blackpool, which
to them was the British Coney
Island. Sully's comment on Black
pool was: "The British when they
get honky-tonk are worse than
Americans."
On June 27, they drove to the
:oast and flew to Le Touquet,
France. Here they had a little
:ifficulty getting past the cus
toms desk, since both had grown
beards and no longer looked like
their passport pictures.
Finally they boarded a train and
headed for Pamplona, Spain, for
the "Running of the Bulls." This
was festival time in Spain and "a
gay time was had by all."
For their one last European ex
pedition, they crossed the Pyra
nees on one scooter with 60 pounds
of luggage, and arrived at the
French Riviera. They then went
to Paris for the Bastille Day
parade down the Champs des
Elysees on July 14.
Looking back on their trip, the
boys feel that they received al
most every benefit possible by
sharing in the lives of the average
Europeans, rather than playing
the customary role of the superior
American.

Scholarship and service are re

those who have served the Univer

life in many ways. Recognizing
outstanding leadership in various
fields, AKG requires a C plus

"We try to select girls who have
