No Fear...
Not too massive, but very, very menacing on tie football field
stanuds rangy tackle Jinm Moss of the Ganecocks. Towering 6-foot,
3-inches, Moss carries 205 pounds of whipcord around on his hard
frame and puts it to devastating use on the gridiron. Fast when pur
suing a quarterback and a devastating blocker, his all-around efforts
for the Birds in every game thus far has gained him a grudging respect
as one of the premiere tackles in the country.

In Rivalry
Comparing the records of the
Clemson-Carolina series, the two
teams seem to hold numerous hon
ors, with Clemson master of a
slight edge. Carolina has won 21
games to Clemson's 34. with 3
ties. During the 58 years of their
encounters, Carolina's largest win
margin occurred in 1925 when the
Gamecocks defeated the Tigers
33-0. Clemson holds the largest
win margin and the largest game
score with their 51-0 triumph in
1900.
Clemson's season started off
with several dismal losses, but
they have defeated highly ranked
Duke and North Carolina, and last
week scored a victory over the
Green Waves of Tulane. Carolina's
victories have spotted their sea
son, but have included two of the
ACC's more successful teams,
(Wake Forest and Maryland).
As far as pre-game forecasts
are concerned, the game could
fall by the flipping of a coin. It
will be a battle of big and power
ful backs against small speedy
ones.

Observing the tension of the
football players, coaches, and the
spectators, one would think that
"Big Thursday" is being played
this year. Sectional rivalry follow
ing the Civil War was continued
when the first shots of "Big
Thursday" were heard in Colum
bia, S. C. in 1896. For over half
a century the University of South
Carolina and Clemson College
have been battling here, with the
exception of last year, when the
crowds "tracked" northward to
pastures of Clemson.
Big Thursday was a featured
holiday in South Carolina for 58
years and was a day on which
people came from north and south
to visit the State Fair, take in a
fewv open-air girlie shows, uncork
their Old Crow, and then sit dowvn
to a head-knocker that bested any
in the state.

schools was played the week be

Since the first clash between
these two schools, there have been
many outstanding coaches, play

spirit of the occasion has never
