Last year as a sophomore Day once again split honors with Hug gins at the "workhorse" slot, but with the spring practice of 1961, Dick showered a few sparks on all other contenders and won a start ing role. Receiving the starting nod most games this year, Day is secon(l in Gamecock rushing with better than a four-yard average per carry. The quick fullback played an outstanding game last week against the Maryland Terrapins as his line smashes went for good yardage whenever Carolina needed the yardage. Dick is not a big fullback, weighing some 190 pounds. How ever, size isn't the only requisite for a football player as the Gamecocks this year have amply shown. Day's greatest attribute is his extreme quickness. After a step, Day is a virtual bullet with lowered head. Once past the line of scrimmage, the bruising fullback undergoes a change. Ie adopts the footwork of a halfback and outdistances his pursuers on many occasions. A "one-hundred percent" ball player. Day is Bass' number one man in a pinch. Dick is married to the former Miss Harriet Howard of North Augusta and the couple lives at University Terrace. IE PiKA Wins Pi Kappa Alpha made its an nial homecoming football game a success as they downed Lambda Chi Alpha, 3-1-0, in a game played for the Muscular Dystrophy Cam paign Monday on Davis Field. After a rather slow first half, the undefeated PiKA's got their offense rolling in the second half to score the win. The USC team competes in nu merous meets, both here and away, and oppose most Atlan tic Coast Conference teams along with various outside op ponents. Jim Costen Gives Birds Run Threat Senior quarterback Jim Costen lit a light in Coach Marvin Bass' eye and grabbed off some honors for himself with his sterling per formance against Maryland Satur day. All-around excellence in every department earned the Player-of the-Week accolade for Costen by the South Carolina Association of Sports Writers. His role in the Gamecocks' 20-10 upset of the Terrapins wvas so great that he earned all but one of the votes cast for the honor. These days, a running quarter back is almost a necessity in col lege football and Costen's per formance showed that the Birds are quite adequate in this respect. A double-threat field general gives the other runners in the backfield more room to operate Jlim Coten andl( puts additional pressure on the defense. Costen cracked the Terp de fense for 76 yards in seven carries and his spectacular burst of 49 yards in the opening period set up the Gamecocks' first score. Hie outgained the entire Maryland team in rushing and his rollout plays loosened up the visitors' secondanry considerably for pass mng. Running, howvever, was not Cog ten's only contribution to the Bird's victory. He hit on five of his ten passes for 72 yards. Two af these went for touchdowns, giving him a big part in all Caro lina a c o r e a . Defensively, he sparkled, helping hold the vaunted NMaryland aerial attack in cheek all afternon. The performance moved the 6 root, 180I-pounder from minus yardage in rushing and put him igh on the Atlantic Coast Con rerence total offense charts. It also added one to the number of r'unning backs that Coach Bass an count on in his akield. Coach Bass' boys, who for most of the season have seesawed be tween mediocracy and magnifi cence, were at their bone-crushing best last Saturday when they knocked off highly ranked Mary land, 20-10. The win allowed the Gamecocks to even their Confer ence record at 2-2, and put their overall slate at two wins against four losses. The Cavaliers, after cracking a 28-game losing streak with an in spired victory in their first outing this season, came up with another triumph along the way and meet the Birds sporting a 2-4 record. Virginia, however, has yet to taste the tang of an ACC win this year, showing three losses inside the Conference. Relying this year mainly on a junior-senior group of players, the Cavaliers possess their best depth in several years. This has helped particularly on defense, where in the past they have been somewhat outmanned by the opposition. On offense, Virginia has always been able to move the ball, both in rushing and passing. Last year they produced the top runner in the league and they can usually produce more than one bull's-eye throwing field general. Stopping the opposition has been a great Virginia problem in recent years. They were thrown over, run around, and plunged through with relative ease. This season, with the coming of a new coach, better depth, and a victory or two, the Cavaliers have become a much tougher nut to crack. Enthusiasm combines with more experienced talent to get the Vir ginia offense moving. Employing a wide-open type of play, they throw to excellent ends and good pass-catching backfield members to loosen the opposing defense up. Directing the Cavalier attack with a gambler's technique will be the dangerous duo of Stan Fis cher and Gary Cuozzo. Both rank as almost equal aerialists, with the senior Fischer developing into a capable runner. Losing second-team All Con ference choice Fred Shepard at the fullback spot definitely weak ens the team there. They are de pending on newcomers Bruce Perry and Bill Mason. along with letterman Tomn Griggs to continue the strength at this spot. Three unusual named, hard-run ning backs operate for the Caval iers at the halves. Ted Rzenmpol uch, Carl Kuhn, and Tony UlehIa are each big, fast, and experi enced enough to give them ground gaining strength at this vital posi tion. All have good average-per carry records, with Ulehla the leader at 5.6 yards. Center Andy Moran won the best blocker award for the team last year and remains a fixture at the pivot of a toughened line. G;uard strength is indicated when co-captain Lou Martig had trouble defending his starting s p o t against such eager intruders as Bob Rowley, Turnlecy Todd, and Emory Thomas. TJackle and end both boast of sterling individual performers. Bruising 235-pound Ronald Gas sert teams with Bill Kanto for a two-year letterman duo at the tackle slot. Gassert, the other co captain, is ranked as one of the top men in the Conference at his job. In Virginia's wildly pass-sling ing scheme of things, end ranks as an important cog in the offense and Joe Kehoe looms above every (me here. An elusive 6 foot 2 inch, 187-pounder, Kehoe found himself clear to haul in 34 passes last season, second in the league, and has continued to shine in this respect this season. Myron Mc Williams, an impressive soph, and Dennis Andrews, shore up the wing situation. Virginia's ball-moving ability, while impressive, may be nuffified by the Bird's sticky forward wall, especially if it continues to op srate with the efficiency of the M!aryland game. The rejuvenated Gamecock attack will put the Cavaliers' improved defense to a mupreme test, with the Birds' luarterback's production telling the tale.
