Outlook For I
Good---Newco
Swimming, as a minor sport, will
try to break the winless Jinx that
it has encountered for the past two
years. The reason for the team's
failuire to win can be explained
briefly-lack of depth. Swimming is
nio different from any other sport;
f the te-im lacks the necessary ma
terial, its season will be unsuccess
ful.
Last year's team contained sev
eral bright spots, that were con.
sistent in capturing first place
honors, but second and third place
-honors also help to make a winning
team.
This year's team will welcome
several promising sophomore swim
met's of last year's freshman team.
Bob Trisler is expected to make a
fine contribttion to the diving event
and Bill Cwan will add depth to
the freestyle events.
Swininng, like track, requires
endurance and that extra effort in
order to be successful. There are
many events that comprise a swim
ming meet, but each swimmer has
his limit. The best physical shape
and ability will not enable a swim
mer to participate in every event,
so the problem of depth is crucial.
Some of the events that need
strong reinforcement are the 100
yard breaststroke, backstroke, and
butterfly, the medley relay, and
especially diving. There is a limited
numbier of varsity divers so this
tvent will require unlimited atten
tion.

Returning swimmers who will
carry a large responsibility are
Tommy Pruitt and Derwood Jordan,
both swimming the freestyle stroke.
Coach Ratliff was very dis
appointed to learn that varsity
swiimmer, Joe Iulings, who swims
the backstroke, butterfly, and re
lays, will be out most of the season
due to a recent shoulder separation.
Coach Ratliff stated that he would
be starting from scratch with a
new group of boys and a new sea
Sol.
This year's schedule will include
all of the schools in the Atlantic
Coast Conference with the addition
of Davidson and The Citadel. It
will also include the ACC Swim
ming Meet to be held at N. C. State
in Raleigh, N. C.
Coach Ratliff has announced that
swimming practice will begin at the
pool at 4:00, Monday, October 30.
Both freshmen and varsity swim
mers are encouraged to be present.
Any others, varsity or freshmen
who are not already on the swim
niing team, are invited to join the
teani.
Intramural Director Weems
Baskin urges all participants in
the intramural football program
to take notice of the new ruling.
There will be no blocking a run
ner out of bounds. The runner
may be shoved only. No runner
may deliberately run into a de
fensive player. Both these in
fractions carry a 15-yard penalty.
The alarming number of injuries
this season prompted this ruling.

tioli thcy go into on occasions. The
Terps also line up in anything from
a Wing-T to a Lonesome end
formation.
The visitors also present difficult
pro,blems to the opposing defense,
nt only because of the weird for
mt:ions but also because of the
strong p!ayers the Terps field at
these S pots. Two top-drawer
quarterbacks direct their multi
pronged attack.
Senior Dick Novak leads the
charge, ranking as a talented run
ner and passer, hitting on 29 of his
51 passes thus far this year. Dick
Shiner, only a sophomore, but al
ready one of the ACC's top players,
places third in the Conference in
total offense, and is a long passing
threat.
A solid fullback punch backs up
the Terps' strength at quarterback.
Power plungers Pat Drass and Joe
Irezo are relatively light, but
combine good speed to add to the
attack and are to be reckoned with
once they get into the defensive
secondary.
It is at halfback that the Mary
landers' fortunes will rise or fall
this season and thus far their con
tribution have given the Terrapins
an almost stratospheric boast. Two
of the top three ground gainers in
the Conference are Maryland half
backs.
Dlennis Condie, a slight 510",
1100 pounder. one of the best Terp
1rnilng backs in recent years, is
the vi5it rs' top threat at this spot.
A!,h-,ugh forced out of their last
game. he is expected to be at full
strength for the Birds.
Another top-notch siphomore for
the Terps is Frnie Arizzi, a real
pced-ball who has pounded out an
:iverage (Of 6.7 yard> per carry for
:bem this year, rank;ng as the third
rusher in the ACC behind Condic.
Other halfback stalvarts for the
\iszitors are Tom Brown and Jim
Davids-..
Ends are one, of the Terps mary
strong points. Besides Collins, the
Maryianders start W4" Dick Bar
uni1, with "'li: vl'" WO" Ilenrv
P'oni:towski backing them up. Of
iollins. he is said to be impossible
to c.ntain, even with double team
ing, and his game-winning feats
hav'e beomeII almost legendary.
In the Terps' large and capable
ine, they take pride in suc'h per -
fornmers as enormous RZoger Shoals
2401 pounds, and capable Bill
Kirchiro, a 215-pound terror at
guard.
North Carolina beat the Terps
141-8 by containing their offense
with stout defensive play. Whether
USC can come uip with some of the
same, even with the changes Coach
Marvin Bass is contemplating, will
be interesting to find out.
