ts Paper
;roup
7artman's paper. It determines the
nature of the Sahara, which the
author calls "a sea of commerce
and communications"; the effect
of technology, independence and
other new elements in western
Africa; and the nature and future
of four regional unity moves
the Common Organization for the
Saharan Region; the United
North Africa Movement between
Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria;
the Greater Morocco Movement
which seeks to extend Moroccan
rule over Mauritania; and the
Casablanca group of radical Afri
can states.
The Casablanca group, Dr.
Zartman shows in his paper,
might be the basis for the creation
of a powerful radical African bloc
from Algiers to Accra and from
Casablanca to Conakry.
The subject of the paper origi
nally appeared in "The U. S. and
World Affairs," a column written
by the international studies fac
ulty and which appears in the
Columbia Record here.
The article also appears in
abridged form in the current issue
of "African Report," believed to
be the most widely read journal
on African affairs.
