Birds Duke Beats USC Squad Fighting hard, Carolina's improv. ing soccer men went down in defeat before a highly rated Duke team 5-0 last Friday on Davis Field. The only point scored in the first uarter was made by Duke's Virgil, fter a concentrated offensive at tack. In the second quarter, Caro. lina's defense was swarmed under by a Blue Devil show of power and resulted in three scores by Ross, Griffin, and Hyde for the visitors, After the half, Duke held off a strong USC comeback by managing recover soon enough to regain possession of the ball before any Gamecock scoring could be done, One additional point was added by Batelle for the Devils in the third quarter. Carolina's defense stiffened again in the fourth quarter and stopped several Duke scoring opportunities, Duke Coach, Janies Bly, com mented, "Carolina certainlY looked better today than when I saw them over at N. C. State last week. Coach Bruck has certainly done a fine joli with your boys in only five weeks, That goalie (Klaus Thoneus) of yours is one of the best boys I'v( ever seen. le's always alert and I sawv him make several saves thought Were quite difficult." USC's Coach Frank Bruck was pleased with his team's effort. lIc singled out goalie Thoneus as out standing for his scrappy defense. Also he felt Wayne Asplen, Woody Grahen and Mazen Aboushi played well. THIS IS IT $$ Need College Men for Part Time Work CAR NECESSARY 15 HOURS PER WEEK CALL AL 2-5896 8-9:30 A.M. 4-6:00 P.M. Seek USC Tackle Frosh Play Revenge and a chance to play streak wreckers will be the Caro lina Biddies' main objectives as they go for their second straight win of the season against North Carolina State's freshmen today at 5:30 in Carolina Stadium. Last year the Biddies were dealt a 35-6 thrashing by the unde feated Wolflets. This year's Caro lina freshman squad, termed by many to be the most impressive group gathered here in many years, is expected to give the visitors a much better game this time. The State frosh bring an out standing two-year record with them. Extending back to the be ginning of last year, the Wolflets have taken seven games in suc cession. This year's card shows a narrow 7-6 decision over a strong freshman squad from North Caro lina. The Biddies broke into the win ning column last week after fumbling away their first game. ~DVAL F! Takei 's do gustibus--and the Dual Filte Upset Foel Goodrich Wolflets They overcame the Citadel frosh, 20-7, oi the strength of a second half splurge. They dropped their opener to a highly rated Baby Terrapin unit from Maryland, 24-20. A strong Wolflet. halfback-quar terback punch should give the USC freshmen more than one anxious moment. Coach Johnny Clements' charges should mount a powerful ground offensive, but may be lacking if forced to go to the air. Carrying the Carolina colors for the battle will he a talented array of backfield talent, behind a not as-publicized, but very capable line. Directing the team will be quarterback Dan Reeves, a talen ted passer-runner. Halfback is where the Biddies possess much of their depth, both in talent and numbers. Such runners as David Hathaway, who ran a kiekoff back 85 yards against Citadel, Buddy Hailey, Kirt Lawson, and Larry Gill will seek a great deal of action for the Baby Birds today. rI('ytonl CI iVIFayorK .
