Student Council Minutes May 1, 1961 The re ular meeting of Student Council was called to order by President Johi Chappell. 'lbs minutes were read and corrected to read: "Ernest Willis asked if Stu dent CounilM was to appoint the new Freshman Orientation Counselors (rather thar Committee), and over two absences per senester expell a member COMMITrEE REPORTSt Student Discount Committee: Jimmy Mann chairman, reported that he had beer unable to complete his report, but that he wihl attempt to complete the report be fovo next year. He said that the program had been unsuccessful in the past because o lack of cooperation between the Carolina students and the Columbia merchants. H antiountced that he has had several ine-t-tings with Mr. Boynton. the Executive Secro tasrv of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He said that he plans to meet with MI Boynton again in an attempt to set uip a successful student discount program. Orientation Committee: Charles Behling presented the following report: The Uni %ersity has comuplItely revised its Freshman Orientation Program for next year. Canp. ns such. has been done away with, and the on-campus orientation period ha heenl expawled to a week's dunition. (Every new student will be required to participati in the orit, nt;tion program; no one of them%" will be allowed to register unless they hav gone1 through the program, with reguir attendance at the orientation classes, etc.) The new students will arrive on campius by noon. A..e Students In Folk Festival Several Carolina studento will perform in the Columbia Folk Festival to be staged at the Dreher High School auditorium Friday, May 12, at 8 p.m. Included in the program are The Jumbucks, who recently par ticipated in the Student Union Talent Show; The Jesters, who have performed at basketball games and "Y" luncheons; Helen Wooten, who placed first in the Talent Show. Also in the program are Bill Savage, blues guitarist; Valarie Powell, who will do a Russian Folk Dance; The Rum Runners, a trio led by Bill Sigmons; Joaline Clare, a Columbia College student from Panama who plays the guitar; and Gary Nichols, who performs weekly at the Purple Onion.
